“Tick tock . . . Tick tock . . . Tick tock – Friday the Thirteenth of December, 2024”
5:48 PM. Today is the 348th day of this year. There are 18 days left . . . in 2024.
My sister Karen asked me recently if I’ve been to Tik Tok – I haven’t. I’ve been to Me, though. There’s a song called “I’ve Never Been to Me.” And there are words of Scripture that begin with, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” [Matthew 11: 28. ESV]. Well, the words tick tock got me remembering my brother Dale’s pocket watch. Every night when we went to bed, I could hear his watch going “tick tock . . . tick tock . . . tick tock” every second; so, every night I had to get out of bed; and in the darkness find his watch and put it under a stack of underwear in the bureau and get back into bed with some peace and quiet. I asked Dale if that sound bothered him; he said No. I think Dale got that watch for Christmas, maybe; and I wondered if it was bought at Pratt’s Drug Store [where I saw them on sale] — which was across the street from where our cousin Danny and Uncle Roger and Aunt Alice and Gale and her sister lived on Elm Street — before Uncle Roger built a house in Cumberland. And then I remembered that Uncle Leo — who took Dale and me fishing at Rawson Pond in Cumberland [Uncle Leo called it Abbot Run] — he had a pocket watch, too. Maybe that’s how Dale got the idea of wanting a pocket watch for Christmas.
This song makes me cry: “I’ve Never Been To Me (Lyrics) – CHARLENE”
