Memere Richer’s Living Room

Warning . . .

The following might become painful to those of a tender heart.

And those who have hardened their hearts may not feel anything at all.

An Early Memory of The Richer’s Family

The Family of Donat Richer and His Wife Lucia (Roy) Richer

Known to all of us as Memere and Pepere Richer

It was the later years of the 1950s decade

Someone in the Family proposed we go to the beach.

So, on a Sunday during summertime, each family of Memere and Pepere’s children — together with their own children – got into their family cars; and we went on the highway – staying together – each car following the lead car. And we headed to Horse Neck Beach which is on the coast of Massachusetts south of Westport. It was a somewhat cloudy day, and I was hoping the sun would shine as we drove that long way to the beach. I had never been to the seashore in all my young life of about 6 years. Many years later while in college taking an American literature course, we read a short poem by Emily Dickenson who lived in Massachusetts herself in Amhurst. And her poem got me recalling that day at the beach with all our Richer Families Together as One Family in a Caravan of Cars.

I never saw a moor,

by Emily Dickinson

“I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet know I how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.

I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given.”

I still recall seeing for the first time the waves breaking at the seashore that day at Horse Neck Beach; and also remember that we walked along the shore and collected smooth stones and seashells which we brought home and kept for a long time.

When my mother began working again at The Falls Yarn Mill at Market Square in Woonsocket, Rhode Island in the mid-to-late 1950s, I was regularly being babysat by Memere Richer for a while. And I asked her who was that man whose picture was in her living room. She told me it was Pepere Richer and that he was in heaven now. So, in my young mind, I began associating heaven with Memere Richer’s living room on Reed Avenue – because that was where Pepere’s picture was – in Memere’s Living Room; and it was also the room where we saw Santa Claus come in on Christmas Eve each late December and distribute Christmas gifts to all the grandchildren. And The Richer’s Family [Christmas] Tree was there in The Living Room.

If your heart is hardened so that it is not touched “by the things that break the heart of God” [a phrase that World Vision used in the past] then, perhaps it needs the grace of God and the faith of Jesus Christ and the help of the Helper Whom Jesus promised His disciples He would send to them after He was taken up following His resurrection.

Hebrews 7 ESV – The Priestly Order of Melchizedek – For – Bible Gateway

“This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis if a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. For it is witnessed of him,

‘You are a priest forever,

   after the order of Melchizedek.’

“For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.” -Hebrews 7: 15-19. ESV Study Bible.
