I Went to Bed . . .
It was 10:09 PM
Eileen’s birthday is 10/9
My mother never told me I’m numerical. She only said, “You’re so literal!”
However, I am also numerical. Numbers are noteworthy to me – just as words are.
Actually, it was 10:08 – but only a few seconds before 10:09 PM – so, I rounded it off. By the time I got under the quilt and rested my head on the pillow it was 10:09 in the evening.
8 is my number.
Maybe Eileen’s number is 9 ?
8 and 9 are consecutive. They’re close to each other – just as x and y and d and e and b and c – and L M N O P are altogether. When the school bell rings, they all line up in the school yard and walk into school consecutively. Orderliness – just like in bookkeeping. Many books are filled with words. Financial books are filled with numbers.
As I was laying there alone, I was feeling that abominable abdominal pain a few inches to the right and a little lower than my navel – my “thorn in the flesh” [as the apostle Paul called his pain] — along with some right shoulder pain, too . . .
I was remembering Genevieve who I met last summer – it may have been in August – on my walk to the Elm Street and Sweet Avenue neighborhood where I grew up from 0 to 18 years of age. I changed her name because I’ve arrived at the understanding that she doesn’t feel comfortable being written about and published on the Internet. Maybe that’s why I don’t see her on my walks anymore. I don’t really know. I can only imagine. I don’t usually walk in that neighborhood – only occasionally.
I’ve walked into that neighborhood only a few more times since then; and I haven’t seen her since about the 3rd time we met there last summer.

While listening to the song above, I noticed that in the word her is the word he; and also in the word she is the word he.
“So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.” -Genesis 1: 27. ESV Study Bible.
That quotation from the Bible gives me the notion that God has both masculine and feminine qualities or characteristics. I love “the beautiful,” so I’m encouraged to think of God as being beautiful. Although I also read that God is Spiritual and therefore doesn’t have a form.
In bed, I was remembering the last time we met – Genevieve and me. It was at the very same place where we first met a few weeks earlier in that month of August — I think it was — or maybe it was July. It was right in front of where my dad’s TV shop had been in the late 1950s and all through the 1960s and into the 1970s. And he was born in August. And my mom, who took phone calls for his TV business from home on Sweet Avenue [around the corner and halfway down the street—the 8th house] departed in August. And directly across the street — Elm Street – was where The House of Brides bridal shop had been. My first job was working there at Richer’s Radio & TV. I was only about 15 when I started working for my dad. Now, the location where the bridal shop had been is a pizza restaurant. I went there once with Jennifer, my girlfriend during the mid-1990s, when we were living in separate apartments at Sadwin Apartments on Elm Street – but much further away from where my dad’s radio & TV shop had been. My parents were married at the location of Sadwin Apartments in 1948 – on June 19th. That is a national holiday now: Juneteenth. They went to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon. [Eileen and I went to Montreal, Canada in August of 1974]. It was called St. Ann’s Convent at that time. And there was a chapel on the second floor. I asked my mother why they got married in the chapel of the St. Ann’s convent rather than in the church; she replied that the church was so big. Many years later, it became Sadwin Apartments. I moved in there on the last day of 1992 – with my brother Jason’s help. Jennifer came to live there in November of 1994.

Getting back now to Genevieve – the young woman I first met last August or July. I was walking down Merida Avenue to Elm Street. [Back in my school days at St. Charles School, my classmate John Scibak lived on Merida Avenue. He skipped 2nd grade. He was reading The Woonsocket Call at 3 years old]. This would be the 3rd and last time we met. And I saw Genevieve on Elm Street walking with her two dogs. When I reached Elm Street and was across the street from her, I called out, “Hi Genevieve.” She just kept walking and looking straight ahead. So, after walking several more steps, I said again, “Hi Genevieve.” Again, she seemed not to have heard me. I got the impression she didn’t want to talk to me. I walked faster and went on ahead of her and her two dogs. Then, as I was approaching my dad’s former radio and TV shop, I crossed the street and stood in front of where dad’s shop had been – where I had been standing when I met Genevieve for the very first time a few weeks earlier. Genevieve came walking by. I said, “Hi Genevieve,” again. She stopped. I said, “I have a card for you and took it out of my pocket. She said, “What is it?” I answered her, “It’s a greeting card I wrote for you. May I give it to you ?” She replied. “That’s okay.” I understood her reply as being a polite way of saying: No, thank you. So, I put it back in my pocket. I said something like, “Okay Genevieve.” And I walked away. It wasn’t only because she said, “That’s okay.” It was also because she didn’t notice the first two times I said, “Hi.” And I wasn’t offended. I just understood that she wasn’t interested.
It’s now 10:52 PM. I need to stop writing. I can’t go on now. Maybe after a night of sleep I’ll be able to come back to this and write more; but, not now.
The following evening. It’s 11:16 PM now.
January 14th, 2025
When I was in bed yesterday and remembering Genevieve, I felt sorry that I put the card back into my pocket and walked away. I wish I had done this, instead. “Genevieve, could I just walk with you as far as the corner of Hebert Avenue? It’s only about 50 feet away. I won’t say another word unless you speak to me; and I promise, I won’t put a finger on you. I would just like to walk by your side for that one moment of about 60 seconds, Genevieve; and then I will stop at the corner; and you may go on without me, if that is what you wish. It would become a nice memory to me . . . to walk by your side for a little while. Afterwards, I would think about how it felt to me to walk by your side for about one minute.”

At 73, I realize I’m only having imaginings now. Maybe God didn’t write marriage into the script of my life. Maybe He wanted me to be a writer for Him – to touch peoples’ hearts – with the things that touch His heart.

Heavenly Father
Let the people of the United States of America open the eyes of their understanding and see that Your Holy Scriptures tell US –
“Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.” -Jesus. [Luke 12: 48b. ESV Study Bible].
In the name of the Lord Jesus, heavenly Father, let the lawmakers seek Your face, O True God; and ask for the courage to do the right thing in Your Eyes, O God Almighty. Bless them to write and pass just laws that require the very wealthy to pay more in taxes at this time when The United States of America’s National Treasury is in Dire Debt of 36 trillion dollars.
Heavenly Father, it is written of You in the Scriptures that You said:
“He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?” -Micah 6: 8. ESV Study Bible.
Surely it is justice for the lawmakers to write and pass laws that require that the extremely wealthy ought to pay more – rather than less – taxes — to support the country’s government.

“In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
