Remembering Crooks Corner in Bellingham, Massachusetts
I haven’t owned a car in about 35 years; so I don’t see much of the outskirts of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. I was visiting with neighbors in the Community Room of Kennedy Manor earlier this evening. Some of my neighbors come from Bellingham. Someone mentioned Assumption Church. I remember that my grandmother went there after she moved from Woonsocket, RI to Lake Hiawatha in Bellingham, Massachusetts. And that intersection near Assumption church – called Crooks Corner — has other memories with me. I brought my one-and-only kitten, Charcoal – who lived with me for almost 18 years — to the veterinary clinic at Crooks Corner in 1996 for her first ever visit with her doctor. And many years earlier than that in the late 1950s and early 1960s, my family would stop at Crooks Corner to buy ice cream cones at The Lennox on Sunday afternoon rides in Dad’s station wagon. And while we were there, I remember seeing the big white schoolhouse — South School, I believe it was called. I asked Arthur this evening if it was still there. He said, “No, it’s a park now.” Right away, I said, “I’d like to go to that park. I may walk there someday.” It would be nice to sit down at a park bench when I get there; and look at where The Lennox was and South School – maybe The Lennox is still there; and remember being in the station wagon with Dad and Mom and Lesley and Dale and Karen [Lisa, Jason and Todd weren’t born yet] enjoying those ice cream cones. Mom and Dad always got two-scoop cones of chocolate ice cream on a sugar cone; I got a one scoop cone of strawberry ice cream. That was about 65 years ago. Thinking of that word chocolate now; it reminds me of Forrest Gump telling a lady at the bus stop about his own mom and what she said: “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna’ get.” I didn’t get chocolate. I got strawberry and later, vanilla. It would be wonderful if I went there and sat down at a park bench; and Michelle happened to come by and sit down; and we got to talking about memories. In fact, there’s a lady cashier at a supermarket in Bellingham, Massachusetts who is always on my mind, lately. Michelle is her name.
