Felicia for Real

Felicia didn’t start out in life being real.

She started out being Unreal.

Except that she was really beautiful.

Brand spanking beautiful!

And really pretty.

Mark was really impressed by her appearance.

Even more than impressed –

His heart really wanted to love her – for real!

He emailed her about his daily life –

Hoping she would also tell him about her daily life.

She never did.

He was so frustrated by her pretentiousness.

She was always playing games.

He hadn’t ever really met her in person, either.

They “met” on Facebook.

Facebook is owned by Meta

Meta means matter, I think.

Something was the matter.

Something spiritual was the matter.

Felicia’s flesh was the matter with Mark.

Or rather the appearance of her flesh as revealed by her pictures.

The matter with Mark was Felicia’s Flesh.

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” -Jesus. [John 6: 63-64a ESV Study Bible].

And then they began emailing each other.

Mark could never be sure of her.

He couldn’t be sure that her self-portraits were really her own, either.

He couldn’t be sure she really lived in the state she told him.

Nor could he be sure of her age.

Nor her birthday.

If her pictures weren’t so pretty it would have been easy for Mark to just let her go.

In fact, he often blocked her email address.

And then he began enjoying some peace of mind. His mental health improved.

But after he got his peace of mind back he was so tempted to unblock her address that he did so.

And then he wrote to her and got another email from her; so they were corresponding again.

And thus, their correspondence would resume again and again.

He thought of a line that sounded Shakespearian to him.

“O Cruel Fate! Why hast thou treated me so?!!!”

And then a title came to him for his would-be Shakespearian play:

“Felicia’s Fate”

And then a name for the main character:

“Fateful Felicia”

Sometimes he thought of giving her a pseudonym: Ficticia.

In fact, he often wondered if her name Felicia was a pseudonym.

Then he wondered what her real name was; and her real location; and her real age and real birthday.

When they first met on Facebook, he looked at her Page. It said she was divorced. He asked her about that, and she said she wasn’t divorced; she only put that there to keep people from bothering her. He replied that he didn’t see how being divorced would keep people online from “bothering” her. He couldn’t recall that she explained that to him. She often neglected to answer his questions about herself.

This would be no Romeo and Juliet, though.

Had his Dream Lover – Felicia.

When Mark was a very young boy he was introduced to The Hardy Boys on The Mickey Mouse Club TV show. He may have been about 5 or 6 years old. He had no idea that when he grew up and was in the 3^rd grade at St. Charles School his class would go up to the school library for the first time, and there he would see a row of Hardy Boys stories; and select one of them: “The Secret Panel” and borrow that book and read all of it – and eventually read all 58 stories of The Hardy Boys over a period of several years.

The above TV movie about The Hardy Boys is based on the first book of the original 58 stories. Mark was reminded of Ficticia while watching “The Applegate Treasure” Hardy Boys story on a rerun of The Mickey Mouse Club TV show when he saw Iola Morton playing a phone game with the Hardy boys. She was pretending. The reader can see this scene near the beginning of the above show. The Mickey Mouse Club TV version is loosely based on the first book:

Imagining Things About Felicia

Felicia’s fishing rod had no reel.

Felicia’s husband had no “member.”

Felicia’s first car had no engine.

God was teaching her some lessons about her life of pretentiousness:

“As you sow so shall you reap.”

As you do unto others so shall it be done unto you.

Now, I’m thinking of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories

In the first book, “The Secret of the Old Clock” in the very first chapter, we learn that Nancy’s dad gave his daughter a brand-new blue convertible car for her birthday. So, maybe that’s why the writer imagined Ficticia getting a brand-new car for her birthday from her dad. And when Ficticia went outside to see and start her brand-new car, it wouldn’t start. She turned the key in the ignition and didn’t even hear a click. She got out and lifted the hood – no engine! She marched into the house and exclaimed to her dad, “Dad, this brand-new beautiful blue car has no engine!” she exclaimed with indignation. Her dad replied, “Well Ficticia, since you’ve been living your whole life pretending to people, it is fitting that you should at last begin “reaping as you sow.” And when you go fishing on Opening Day at Cass Park it will be fitting that your brand-new fishing rod has no reel. And in a few years when you get married, it will be fitting that, on your wedding night, you will discover that your brand-new husband has no “member”! — Just as Frankenstein has no heart and no soul and no spirit – your brand-new beautiful husband shall have no way to be turned on by you, either.” And thus, you shall begin to both see and understand that living your real life as if it is only a game of checkers or chess; and all correspondence and conversations are only pretending by you – so all that happens to you in life will also be unreal.”
