This morning, I looked in a drawer for a blank card to write to you, Michaela.
I found one immediately.
It has a pretty picture on the cover.
A water scene.

The Picture on the Card Reminded me of a Hardy Boys Mystery Story
“The Mystery of Cabin Island”
Yesterday, I checked the number of that mystery book.
It’s number 8 in the series of 58 books.
8 is my number [as I have often said] and I started first grade in 1958.
Sister Mary Carlene, RSM was our young and pretty teacher.
All covered up in her black & white religious clothes
Except for her hands and face.
And we never had a bad day in her classroom for 9 months of her being our school mom;
And teaching us how to spell, and read, and write.
And on Fridays the second-grade class [which had been her first-graders the year before] came into our classroom; and we all sang songs together while sitting in our desk chairs. The one I most remember was:

But life is very bleak, lately.
Waltzing has 8 letters.
Cabin Island in the story is on Barmet Bay near Bayport – which is only described as being somewhere on the East Coast of the USA. It’s fictional, though. Many years after reading that Hardy Boys stories, I found a real Bayport on a map. It appears to be even smaller than a town – maybe only a village or hamlet. It’s about halfway across the south coast of Long Island, New York. And, in the stories, the Hardy boys’ dad is described as having retired from the New York City police department. He was a detective. And he started his own private detective service. And his sons’ Frank and Joe Hardy often assisted him in his work. And they also worked on mysteries independently of their dad’s cases. And I want to mention that the Hardy boys as depicted on the Mickey Mouse Club TV Show are different than the Hardy boys in the books. At the very beginning of the Hardy Boys on TV, they are shown as wrestling with each other in the driveway of their home; and Joe is extremely vigorous; but, in the stories, Frank and his younger brother Joe, never wrestled each other. They always worked together and were focused on solving the mysteries they were involved in. They were not aggressive. And I also want to assure Michaela that, at 73 years old, I’m nothing like the man in the famous song “O Shenandoah” either. I wouldn’t dare steal a woman — even if I was in love with her and wanted to marry her. I honestly feel like a very tired older man now. I’m not aggressive, nor am I ambitious; and not athletic, either. I only like to do things like writing; having a cup of tea; and taking a walk. I’m very gentle. True love can only grow where there is gentleness and kindness and peace and lowliness and humility and sincerity and honesty.
The Hardy Boys and some friends went there – to Cabin Island — on Christmas vacation to solve a mystery.
They lived there on Cabin Island for two weeks — if I remember correctly.
They got there on iceboats because that winter was so cold that Barmet Bay froze over. They always had whatever they needed to get wherever they wanted to go: motorcycles, a roadster; a motorboat they called The Sleuth – and in The Mystery of Cabin Island they had an iceboat.
The setting seemed so cozy on Cabin Island.
What got me looking for a card, Michaela, was wanting to write to you again.
To simply confide to you that I’m imagining having a drink with you somewhere.
Somewhere we can sit at a table and have a drink; and you can tell me about your tattoos – or anything else – we don’t have to talk about tattoos, at all – unless you want to.

I wonder some things about them:
Why you got them.
Do you still like having them.
Do you have others besides the ones on your forearms.
To listen to the sound of your voice.
And your eyes meeting mine sometimes.
And seeing your hands holding your drink.
I imagine these thoughts may give you “the creeps” – that’s why I’m ashamed of myself for writing about you. So, I’m hesitant now about publishing this writing. I don’t want to upset you. And that’s why I changed names. I understand you may not like that I write about you. I apologize for that. I’m only writing from my heart as an older man having imaginings – a dreamer – like a song writer writing love songs – or a novelist.

I’m no “Sherlock Holmes,” either.
Nor am I Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer of those detective stories.

Since August 2018
The month my mom departed this life at 88 years old.
My blog has about 472 “stories” now.
I hope they “outlive” me.
I hope they become famous works of American literature – like Emily Dickenson’s poetry; and Henry David Thoreau’s essays; and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s stories. And by the way: those three famous American authors all lived in Massachusetts. I’d really like that – if young people and older people too – read my stories. I’d like them to become reading and writing and discussion works for young people in school. Maybe college students with aspirations of becoming social workers — or even those who hope to become psychiatrists might find my stories worth reading and studying and discussing in class. And, maybe a few people might find my faith in Jesus Christ and quotations from the Bible interesting; maybe a few might become born again Christians – if they become believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in The New Testament of The Bible.
And maybe some people will be inspired to fall in love with a person; rather than disobey God and love the world and the things of this world that are all passing away.
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” -1 John 2: 15-17 ESV Study Bible.

And, Michaela, it isn’t all about your tattoos, either. They are only images – like pictures are images. And I’m not mad about pictures and images and tattoos.
When I was a very young boy going to Elm Street Variety and bought penny candy there; I bought some penny tattoos that I moistened and placed on my hand. I may have only done it once. It was easy to wash them off afterwards. And that store was run by Mr. and Mrs. Cote. They lived in the neighborhood. And once when we were in the car on our way to Lake Hiawatha in Bellingham, Massachusetts, we stopped at the intersection of Bellingham Street and Pulaski Boulevard, and Dad mentioned that the store across the street was owned by relatives of our Cote relatives. My dad’s sister, my Aunt Muriel, married into the Cote family. That house where the store was is still there; but the store is not; and Elm Street Variety on Elm Street in Woonsocket has a new name. And The House of Brides shop that was across the street from my dad’s Richer’s Radio & TV Shop on Elm Street is now Elm Street Pizza.
Now I’m sipping a cup of tea at 5:28 AM on May 26, 2025, and imagining Michaela reading this and imagining her thoughts:
Michaela: “Mark, I’d like to “tattoo” you – for writing about me.”
Mark: “I wonder, Michaela, what kind of image you’d like to tattoo me with. I can only recall the image of a rose on your forearm.”
Michaela: “That is not the kind of tattoo I mean, Mark.”
Mark: “Well, I hope Michaela, that someday you tattoo me with a kiss on my lips with your lips – that leaves a mark on my heart that lives forever. And, maybe, it’s already there – even before we ever kiss – and even if we never kiss – you may already be living here in my heart, Michaela. Maybe that’s why I write about you.”
Maybe you already made a mark on my heart that time you asked me at the checkout what was in my shirt pocket – the gospel tracts I took out and showed you. Maybe, Michaela, your presence and your spoken words to me are more powerful and impressive and touch me more than tattoos ever could. As Jesus said: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” -John 6:63 ESV Study Bible.
