A few days ago I was almost at the supermarket in South Bellingham.
Stopped on the sidewalk in front of Picard Auto Service.
I closed my eyes to pray —
Because I wanted to walk to the door of that white building
And just place my hand on that door handle.
The Handle of Doreen’s Dad’ Door –
I feel like crying when I read that last line above this one.
Imagining that — once upon a time — in Reality — Maybe Doreen had sometimes touched the handle of that door when she visited her Dad at work. Maybe she even worked there sometimes with her dad. Since she worked at a machine shop she may have also worked on cars – like her dad did.
I saw the word Security on a sign on that white building though
When I opened my eyes after praying
And it gave me a sense that I should not step on the property.
So, I walked across the street and went to the supermarket –
Which was my original destination for taking this walk.
It is now a few days later —
And I’m imagining that scene in front of that white building.
In my imagination I walk to the door
And just as I’m about to touch the door handle
The door opens . . .
And Doreen is standing there inside holding the door open.
The business is closed.
The light is not on inside;
But I can see Doreen in the dimness of that unlit room.
Perhaps the room is lit by a gentle spiritual light –
The Light of Doreen’s Presence.
She’s looking right at me.
She looks so beautiful.
She’s dressed in white.
Just as her dad’s business is in white.
Just as 116 Glen Road in Woonsocket, Rhode Island is in white.

I’m simply stunned in silence as our eyes meet.
Doreen’s eyes are penetrating me. There is a very slight smile on her lips
And a twinkle in her eyes so bright.
She is vibrantly lively.
There is a powerful feeling of attraction to her.
She is adorably beautiful.
She is glowing in the dimness.
She is the light in the darkness of the doorway.
There is an aura about her presence.
The first syllable of her name sounds just like Door.
And Jesus said, “I AM the door.”
And the second syllable of Adore also sounds just like the word Door.
And music begins to play – from I don’t know where . . .

Doreen: “Hello, Mark.”
Mark: “Hello, Doreen.”
Doreen: “You came by to see me ?”
Mark: “Yes Doreen.”
Doreen: “Here I AM, Mark.”
Mark: “Yes Doreen.”
Doreen: “Would you like to come in, Mark ?”
Mark: “Yes, Doreen – with your permission.”
Doreen: “You have my permission to enter, Mark.”
Mark: “Thank you, Doreen.”
Mark: “I can’t take a single step, Doreen.”
Doreen: “What is the matter, Mark ?”
Mark: “It’s like once when I was in 5th grade; and I was called on to read; and I just couldn’t speak a word out loud; Sister Mary Antonious called me to her desk. She put her arm around my waist as she sat at her desk; and she encouraged me to try again to read. So, I tried again; and was able to read out loud with her arm around me.”
Doreen reaches out her hand; and Mark extends his hand and clasps Doreen’s hand. And she gently pulls him to her – very closely to her. Their lips are almost touching. “Kiss me, Mark.” Mark’s lips touch Doreen’s lips. “How did that feel, Mark ?” “It felt beyond words, Doreen.” “What does that mean, Mark ?” “I feel different than I ever felt before. I feel a togetherness with you that I never experienced in all my life. As if, all my life I’ve only been one-half a person; and now I AM a whole person – in completeness with you, Doreen.”
Doreen: “You’ve come a long way on your walk today, Mark. You began in Woonsocket, Rhode Island and entered Blackstone, Massachusetts; then into Bellingham; and now we are in Eternity. It is The Presence of Christ here that makes us feel whole – in Oneness with Him our Lord and Savior.”

Doreen: “Mark, I’d like to walk outside with you. I haven’t been outside for a very long time.”
Mark: “I would love to walk with you, Doreen.”
Doreen: “May I take your hand into mine again, Mark, as we walk ?”
Mark: “Yes, Doreen. I would love to hold hands with you as we walk.”

Doreen: “Mark, I would love to walk with you all the way to Lake Hiawatha where I grew up. It’s about 4 miles away, though. I would love to walk around the lake with you, Mark.”
Mark: “I want to walk with you Forever, Doreen. And a walk around the Lake with you would be romantic.”
Doreen: “Are you a romantic, Mark ?”
Mark: “During “the summer of ‘74” Eileen told me that.”
Doreen: “Why did Eileen say that to you ?”
Mark: “I can’t recall why she said that to me. I don’t know if she really thought I was romantic; or if she was planting that idea in my mind; maybe she wanted me to become a romantic person.”
Doreen: “Are you a romantic person now, Mark ?”
Mark: “If my Lord wants me to be a romantic, then that must be how I am.”
Doreen: “You believe in the Lord ?”
Mark: “Yes, I do believe in the Lord Jesus, Doreen. He is my Savior and my Good Shepherd.”
Doreen: “He is my Lord and Savior, too.”
Doreen: “May I ask you, Mark: How old were you during that romantic summer of ’74 ?”
Mark: “I was 22, Doreen.”
Doreen: “And how old was Eileen ?”
Mark: “Eileen was 21. She would turn 22 in early October.”
Doreen: “I was also born in October – in late October. And I was 22 when I departed. In fact, I was born on the 22nd day.”
Mark: “Maybe 22 is your number, Doreen.”
Doreen: “Maybe it is. And what is your number, Mark ?”
Mark: “I think 8 is my number.”
Doreen: “Why 8, Mark ?”
Mark: “So many things in my life have the number 8.”
Doreen: “Do you play the card game called “Crazy 8s ?”
Mark: “I bought a deck of cards called “Crazy 8s” but when I opened the pack, discovered it requires more than one player. It isn’t like Solitaire.”
Doreen: “Do you play Solitaire, Mark ?”
Mark: “Yes, my grandmother, who lived at Lake Hiawatha taught me that game while I was at her cottage one summer for a few days and nights. And the name Hiawatha has 8 letters. And your neighbor, Sandy, lived at 8 Lake Shore Drive.”
Doreen: “You know my neighbor, Sandy ?”
Mark: “Yes, I saw her valedictorian address in The Woonsocket Call the Saturday morning after her graduation from Bellingham High School on Friday, June 6th, 1980. After reading it I wrote a letter to her that same day. And mailed it. A few days later she wrote back to me. So we corresponded by letters for more than two years. And her birthday is also in October – the same birthday as Eileen; but 10 years later. And at Oak Hill Cemetery in Woonsocket many years ago, I found a tombstone with that same date as Eileen and Sandy’s birthday. And on the opposite side of that same tombstone is the birthdate of a man who was born on my birthday; but in the 1800s. They may have been brother and sister. Job Pickford is the name of the father of that family.”
Doreen: “Were you born on the 8th day of the month, Mark ?”
Mark: “I was born on the 14th day of the month following October – exactly 6 months after the day of the month that Israel became a State on May 14,1948. I wasn’t born in 1948, though. My parents got married in June of 1948 – June 19th. It’s a national holiday now: Juneteenth, or, Freedom Day. And on the night of June 18-19th, 1974 I slept with Eileen in her parents cottage on Great Island – near Point Judith, Rhode Island. We didn’t go “all the way” though.
Doreen: “What happened between you and Eileen ?”
Mark: “In about mid-August of that romantic “summer of ’74” the romance ended.”
Doreen: “What happened ?”
Mark: “The mood changed from happy to irritable; so, we stopped dating.”
Doreen: “Were you irritable with her ?”
Mark: “No.”
Doreen: “On the last day of my life I met someone who was more than irritable.”
Mark: “I wish you hadn’t gone down that staircase to confront him; but, you were very brave from what I can understand from reading about it. I guess you wanted to save the other lady; and so, you went down the staircase and tried to stop him.”
Doreen: “I cannot recall what happened at all – just like my neighbor and landlady cannot recall it.”
Mark: “Something less violent but still traumatic happened to me, also. And I cannot recall all of it; only some of it.”
Doreen: “What happened, Mark ?”
Mark: “I don’t feel at liberty to talk about it just now; but a while later I was taken to see my pediatrician, Dr. Dashiff on Harris Avenue. As soon as he listened to me and spoke to me, I began feeling better. I also took a prescription of tranquillizers for two weeks. And that was the end of it, sort of. And years later, I learned that Dr. Dashiff’s residence was on Glen Road – right next door to Eileen’s family’s residence.”
Doreen: “Mark, instead of us walking all the way to Lake Hiawatha I wonder if we might just go across the street from my dad’s business and have a cup of coffee at the donut shop ? Would you be agreeable to that ?”
Mark: “Yes Doreen. My heart feels very agreeable with you. I just want to go along with you in every way.”
Doreen: “Mark, before we go into the coffee shop would you give me a hug ?”
Mark: “I would love to hug you, Doreen.”
Doreen: “Mark, I don’t have anything with me to pay for my drink.”
Mark: “I would love to pay for whatever we buy, Doreen.”
After Doreen and Mark walk out of the coffee shop . . .
Doreen: “Mark ?”
Mark: “Yes Doreen ?”
Doreen: “I haven’t had anything to eat in ages.”
Mark: “There is a pizza restaurant just a little way down this sidewalk. The number on the door is 54. My brother Dale was born during the summer of 1954.”
Doreen: “I would so much enjoy having pizza again – for the first time in ages.”
Mark: “Let’s go there, Doreen. I would love to sit in there with you and enjoy pizza together with you.”
As Doreen and Mark are sitting in that restaurant near the door, Mark remembers something.”
Mark: “Doreen I’ve been here once before – in 1989. I was with Eileen. We came here on a date. And the date was: May 13th, 1989. It was a sandwich shop then.”
Doreen: “You often remember her, Mark.”
Mark: “Eileen says I’m living in the Past.”
Doreen: “Are you living in the Past, Mark ?”
Mark: “I believe I’m living in Christ.”
Doreen: “What does that mean, Mark ?”
Mark: “It means living in the faith of the Son of God — Jesus Christ — and with the help of His Holy Spirit.”
