It was 7 years ago today – August 14th – that I last saw my mother alive on planet Earth in 2018. The next day I received a phone call concerning her departure. And the day after that – on August 16th — I was taking a walk in Woonsocket, Rhode Island – and thinking:
This is the first day in all my life of 66 years (at the time) that my mother is not living on Earth.
August is the month when school vacation comes to an end; and the children go back to their classes – and see their classmates again and meet their new schoolteacher; and begin learning again and doing homework and taking the school bus. It is a time for change. And a time for new beginnings.
“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
“For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

When we are first born we know nothing.
As we grow, we wake up gradually.
We become self-aware.
Many cling to their self
All their life long.
However . . .
There Is Much More Than Self.
If we cling to self
We become more and more selfish.
God calls us to believe the gospel of Jesus Christ
And become believers in and on Him
Who Is Greater than self.
Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about this in John 3.

And in Matthew 13 Jesus teaches by parable about the sowing of seeds.

Just as an acorn is not and end-in-itself —
Its potential is to take root and grow up –
And become something much more —
Those who refuse God’s Way of Salvation
Are like very young children who have no godly wisdom —
And in their spiritual darkness they tell their mother:
“You may not change me.”
“I do not want to change nor be changed.”
“I’m just fine the way I am.”
Those who refuse to repent and believe the gospel and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ are not allowed into the kingdom of God. They do not have his Spirit within them.
And outside the kingdom of God there is only darkness and weeping and gnashing of teeth and eternal punishment and torment.
And those who recognize the need to be changed physically and say, “I’ll change myself.”
Still, they need a spiritual change of heart that only the Holy Spirit can do.
And the Lord Jesus only sends his Holy Spirit into the hearts of those who believe – not in themselves – but in True God.
