Memories of School Days

Remembering taking the school bus to St. Charles School.

The school was almost in the North End of Woonsocket –

At the corner of Earle Street and Daniels Street.

In the winter when it was especially cold early in the morning, my sister Lesley and brother Dale and friend-and-classmate John waited inside a laundromat for the school bus. The dryers made the room especially warm – which was especially comforting on those cold  winter mornings. And what a “tour” of Woonsocket we got on that ride ! The bus went all the way to East Woonsocket to pick up other classmates – such as Thomas and Stephen on Elder Ballou Meetinghouse Road near Conrad Street. And Eddie Berry, too. He became famous as an ice hockey goalie in high school. Remember sitting with him on the bus and looking at our baseball cards.  And the bus went way up that historic road – all the way to Bound Road – where Woonsocket had an airport; but it wasn’t used much anymore. And then the bus came down Diamond Hill Road to get Paula and her older and younger sister. And on Cass Avenue – near Chipman’s Corner — we picked up Linda.

On days when it snowed so much that school was canceled, Lesley and I took our snow sled out of the garage and walked in the deep snow to Emerson Street in our neighborhood; and sled down the hill to Sweet Avenue together on one sled.

Before we had school bus service, my dad drove us to school in his station wagon before going to work at his TV and Radio shop on Elm Street – across the street from The House of Brides bridal shop. When I was in first grade, dad also brought Eileen G. and her older brother Ronald to school with us. They lived just down Sweet Avenue from us and across Cass Avenue — behind a big house facing Sweet Avenue — in a Quonset hut. Ronald wore a black leather motorcycle jacket and black leather engineer boots. I was too young in first grade to notice that his younger sister – who was in my class – was as pretty as Shirley Temple. And only recently did it occur to me that she and I never spoke to each other; so, I can only wonder what her voice sounded like. I hope that someday – maybe only in heaven – in the kingdom of God — we will meet again; and I hope she’s as beautiful   — and maybe even more beautiful — than she was as the pretty 7-year-old girl in first grade. Maybe her voice will be so beautiful that I will be even more impressed by her voice than I am with her appearance. Maybe her voice will give me reason and inspiration to write about this new experience of her and what she does to my heart and mind and soul and spirit whenever she speaks to me.

The name Eileen means light.

The Living Voice of Eileen . . .

Maybe her voice and her appearance will be like the presence of God to me.

Or . . .

Maybe it will be something else about her – something spiritual – and maybe that something else that is spiritual is already happening to me. I don’t know.

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” -Jesus [John 6: 63 ESV].

“But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,

   Nor the heart of man imagined,

What God has prepared for those who love him” –

These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” -1 Corinthians 2: 9-10. ESV Study Bible.

At St. Charles School, Religion was our first class each morning for all 8 years we attended; although Eileen G. was no longer there after first grade [if I remember correctly]. And as well as I can remember, our religious education was all based on Roman Catholic doctrine. We weren’t taught from the Bible and The New Testament in the Bible. We weren’t taught anything about believing in and on the only-begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. We were only taught so as to become Roman Catholic members of that religion. We were not taught about becoming born again Christians. During the last few months of 8th grade – our last year at St. Charles School – we did begin reading the Bible. I suspect, though, that this Bible reading was just included at the end of our 8 years of education so that they could claim that we were taught from the Bible. But, we were not really taught from the Bible – the holy Scriptures inspired by the Holy Spirit. We only became Roman Catholics – not born-again Christian children of God by faith in His Son, our Lord and Savior and Redeemer and Good Shepherd.

There was a time when we were told about and heard about Emerald City in “The Wizard of Oz” . . . and it seemed so wonderful –

Maybe we are now at a different time and in a different era.

Maybe we are about to come to a Land Beyond Oz.

Is that impossible, you ask ?

Maybe, in the New Land Beyond Oz,

The Impossible Is Possible

Maybe Probable

Maybe Inevitable

Maybe It’s a Certainty

Waiting on the LORD

“Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you,

   And therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.

For the LORD is a God of justice;

   Blessed are all those who wait for him.”

 – Isaiah 30: 18. ESV Study Bible.

“but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;

   They shall mount up with wings like eagles;

They shall run and not be weary;

   They shall walk and not faint.”

-Isaiah 40: 31. ESV Study Bible.

“Give attention to me, my people,

   And give ear to me, my nation;

For a law will go out from me,

   And I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.

My righteousness draws near,

   My salvation has gone out,

   And my arms will judge the peoples;

The coastlands hope for me,

And for my arm they wait.

Lift up your eyes to the heavens,

   And look at the earth beneath;

For the heavens vanish like smoke,

The earth will wear out like a garment,

And they who dwell in it will die in like manner;

But my salvation will be forever,

   And my righteousness will never be dismayed.”

-Isaiah 51: 4-6. ESV Study Bible.

“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”  When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,

   And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

“Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

“He has blinded their eyes

   And hardened their hearts,

Lest they see with their eyes,

   And understand with their heart, and turn,

   And I would heal them.”

“Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.” -John 12: 36-43 ESV Study Bible.
