“Godly Grief Produces a Repentance That Leads to Salvation”
I was just sitting down in the rocking chair that used to be my mother’s on Sweet Avenue a long time ago, sipping a cup of coffee.
And, out of the blue, a scene came into my imagination.
Two friends were at a tennis court playing tennis. A young man and young woman. She was in an irritable state of heart and mind and soul and being. When her friend hit the tennis ball to her to begin their game, she dropped her racket and caught the ball and threw it away as far as she could. And her friend, in wonder, asked her from the other side of the net, “Why did you do that?” She exclaimed, “Because I don’t care, that’s why !”
And someone in the stand caught the ball and innocently tossed it back onto the court. It stopped right at her feet. She picked it up – and in her madness she put it to her mouth; and with her very strong and gleaming white teeth and jaw – like the mouth of a lion — she took a very hard and violent bite out of it and threw it away again; but this time – in her raging heart – she accidently bit her finger; and she bit it so hard she began bleeding profusely.
Someone in the stands who had 20/15 vision – like Ted Williams — was about 75 feet away; and he saw everything. She was suddenly about to panic as she saw her blood flowing so freely from her hand. The man in the stands saw her face and her fear; he called to her, “Come here, please. I can help you; I’m a registered nurse. I work in an emergency room.” She ran to him with her bleeding hand extended to him. He immediately grasped her hand and with his other hand he gently but firmly pressed down on the artery in her wrist. The bleeding immediately stopped. “I must hold your hand and wrist for several minutes like this. The blood at the wound will soon coagulate and stop the bleeding; only then may I let go of your hand.”
[Silently, she said in her heart, “Hold my hand forever – don’t ever let it go. – And hold my bleeding heart, too . . . please].
She felt so relieved to be in his professional care. Her panic subsided. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She felt such gratitude for his help. After several more minutes he let go of her hand. The bleeding had stopped. She put her other hand and arm around him and said from her heart into his ear, “Thank you so very much, sir.” For the first time, he looked into her eyes. He saw the tears in her eyes. He felt something, too. And she was feeling something new in her heart. Her heart had always been so hard as a rock that it never felt anything but madness. Now she was all-of-a-sudden feeling tender loving feelings there. She felt like crying with such thanksgiving in her heart that she had never experienced such tender loving feelings before. And she didn’t even know how this suddenly happened to her. Was it the kindness and helpfulness of this man in the stands that touched her heart and opened it like a sprouting seed that was no longer just a hard acorn-like kernel in her bosom?
“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in this matter.” -2 Corinthians 7: 10-11 ESV Study Bible.
