Saying Hi to the People of Long Ago –
And to the people of here and now.
“But Jesus answered them, ‘You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. I took another walk to Sweet Avenue today – April 9th, 2026. The Lord is changing me. I was shy and quiet as a young boy. Now I want to talk to the people I meet on my walks. And I wave a thank you to the drivers of cars as they stop for this older guy crossing at intersections. And lately, I’m going even further than that – I say Hi quietly to the people who used to inhabit the houses I pass – in loving memory of them. I said Hi to Jennifer’s sister, Angela. She lived in a house at the corner of Elm and Dulude. And right across the street was Bruno Camilucci’s Store where we went after Mass on Sunday mornings to buy the Sunday papers and a few other things for Sunday dinner. I said Hi to Mr. Camilucci, too. And as I crossed the street I looked down Dulude Avenue and said Hi to Jeannine R. When I went by Charlie the Barber’s Shop, I said Hi to him – my first barber as a little boy. At first, my dad took me there – but after a while mom sent me there alone. I had to sit on a board across the arms of the chair — I was so little. I also went to the Quonset hut behind a house facing Sweet Avenue and gazed at that house where Eileen G. lived when we were first-graders at St. Charles School. I told her again, “I love you, Eileen.” And I was imagining being friends with her when we were both 7 years old. I was wanting to go there as a 7-year-older and maybe see her playing outside. I could have said Hi to her for real. Maybe we could have walked to Cass Park together. We never talked to each other when we were children. It would be wonderful to hear the sound of her voice when we were children. I heard her one-year-older brother’s voice once on Sweet Avenue. Ronald Gaouette. He was in second grade when Eileen and I were in first grade. I was sitting on the wall of Mr. & Mrs. Masse’s house. She was a piano teacher. And Ronald came walking up Sweet Avenue. I noticed his eyebrows were gone and asked him about that. He said he accidentally shaved them off.
