“Conversations Overheard with My Eyes Closed”

[and my ears open and no one knew I was awake and listening to every word].

Don’t worry. It’s just my imagination, I guess.

Yeah, right . . .

Well, what else could it be?

Maybe it’s your demoms. I mean, your demons.

Maybe you were right the first time.

What do you mean?

Maybe it is demoms or demums. My mom used to talk to me so much I began to wonder if she had a demon.

What kind of demon?

A demon of talk. A talking demon. A demon of talk.

You mean like non-stop talking?

Yeah, that’s exactly what I mean. A domineering spirit of verbosity.

What was so domineering about just talking?

It seemed like an avalanche of words.

Being buried alive under a tremendum of too many words. No rest for my eardrums. Excessive innervation of those delicate little drums in my ears. Demons drumming on my ear drums.

Boom boom boom boom boom.

Tinkle . . . tinkle . . . tinkle . . . tinkle

Hey! Would you little dedrums go find your own little drums to drum?

Leave mine alone, OK?

Well, why didn’t you run for your life?

Why didn’t you run for the sake of your peace of mind, for your soul, for your salvation; why didn’t you run from that misery?

I guess I didn’t know any better.

I didn’t fully realize what was happening.

It was a spiritual experience – not a physical avalanche.

It is a kind of danger you can’t see with the eyes in your head.

It can only be seen by the eyes of our understanding being opened.

And what does that have to do with “Conversations Overheard”?

Well, in my private thoughts, I hear conversations.

Give me an example of a conversation you hear in your private thoughts, please.

This one that we are having, right now, is an example of a private conversation, or dialogue, occurring in my private thoughts.

And what is my name? And what is your name?

Well, I know what my name is; but, I don’t know what your name is.

What is your name?

My name is Mark David ______ . What’s your name?

Remember that old radio program called “The Shadow”?

Well, I heard of it; but, it was before my time – sort of before my time.

I think that radio program began about 1939 and ended in 1954.

I was born in late 1951; so, it ended when I was only about 2 years old – too young to listen to it and understand it. Maybe my mom listened to it. I don’t know.

My mom used to hit me, too. When I was younger. Sometimes I began to think that the verbosity that she did when I was older was because she knew she couldn’t hit me anymore – so, she found another method to hurt me, a method that wasn’t obvious abuse like strapping me with a leather strap; a method I wouldn’t realize was abuse – not too many people would understand “many words” being away to abuse someone, but it can be, it can be psychological torture also known as mental torment by sheer number of words. I noticed that, if I listened to her talking to me for like 15 minutes and then I said something, I hardly got to the end of one sentence and she was talking again. Relentless.

Well, anyway, in the introduction to the program it was said: “Who knows what . . . lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows.”

And why are you bringing that up?

Just call me Shadow; OK, Mark?

OK, Shadow.

Hey Shadow, I just got an idea for a title.

What is it, Mark?

“Mark and his Moon Shadow”

I like the sound of that title. A title for what, though?

I don’t know yet. Maybe something will come to me . . .

Let’s take a short break and listen to a song to lighten things up, shall we? Like an in interlude during a radio program or recess during the school day.

[My mother told me that the night before I was born in near-mid-November she was getting into the car to go to the hospital and she saw the moon in an opening behind the passing clouds of that windy November night. It must have been the night of November 13th.  And she said that the day I was born the sky was overcast.]

So, what is the meaning of all this mysterium?

You must be born again by believing the gospel in order to receive the Helper who leads us into all truth and will be with us forever even unto the end of the age.

Read and believe the gospel according to John to begin being born again.

Otherwise, the light that is in you will be darkness – and you will not understand the things pertaining to godliness and eternal life in Christ.

“Cat Stevens – Peace Train (Peace Train lyrics on screen)”

Do you really believe the gospel?

Well, sometimes, I wonder if God is driving us out of our minds.

Why would He do that?

Maybe because as children of Adam and Eve who ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, we think we know something when we really don’t know anything yet as we ought to know. So, God, through the Scriptures and the Helper, brings us, gradually, to the realization and understanding that we don’t really know anything. And then, hopefully, we begin to appreciate that all we can do is love Him with all of our heart and love our neighbor as we love our self – remembering and understanding all the time that we aren’t as smart as we think or imagine we are.

“The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is known by God.” -1 Corinthians 8:2, 3. NIV Study Bible.

“Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” -Romans 3:19, 20. NIV.

“But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished – he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.” -Romans 3:21-26. NIV Study Bible.
