An Imaginary Play

Setting: Friends At Home

A Prologue

Sometimes our lives seem like a train wreck; so then, our writing about it may reflect that wreckage and seem out of order and all mixed up.

During “the summer of ’74” Eileen had/has a much younger sister named Carolyn. Carolyn was 7 years old that summer of ’74. She was born in May – late May, I think it was. Eileen brought Carolyn to the circus at The Providence Civic Center that May – for her birthday present. I didn’t ask Eileen if I could go, too. It was early on in our friendship that Spring and I may have felt it would be intrusive of me to ask; or, May Be maybe mark just didn’t “go for” circuses – seeing animals in such circumstances May have seemed sad to his heart and soul – like animals in cages at the zoo. Carolyn also got 4 puppies for her birthday that year. Mark saw them the one time he was invited by Eileen to her home at “Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116 House” on Glen Road — to learn how to play chess in the basement of that house in the North End. It was an honor and a privilege to be in Eileen’s House and to spend an hour with her there alone in the basement of her family’s home. All we did was learn to play chess. When it was time to go, Eileen’s Mom explained about the four new puppies near the door and how they May not be keeping them. The puppies were at their food bowls near the door at the bottom of the beautiful staircase that went up to the second floor – which maybe mark never saw. Many years later, during the many years that his heart yearned to see Eileen again, he would wonder about Eileen’s room and exactly what it looked like. When he came for Eileen the early evening of their date to see The Beach Boys in concert at The Providence Civic Center, Eileen came down that staircase just like a beautiful princess as her mother and I waited for her at the bottom of those stairs that early evening in May.

So, how do broken things between Eileen and Mark turn to thoughts of Carolyn, her younger sister? Fourteen years younger. Mark was born on the fourteenth of November. And his youngest brother who is married was born in late May of the same year as Carolyn.

Mark: “Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Yes, Mark?”

Mark: “Would you read to me?”

Carolyn: “Why do you want me to read to you, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, it’s so quiet here in my heart. I haven’t heard your voice in such a long time. In fact, I haven’t heard your voice since 1974 when you were 7 years old. I wonder what your voice sounds like now. Your voice was so soft in 1974 in your parent’s cottage by the sea on Great Island. Are you still soft-spoken, Carolyn? I would just love to hear your soft-spoken voice again speaking to my heart so peacefully. Last night while I was waiting to fall asleep I was thinking of you and wondering if your eyes are also soft-spoken. It seemed like it would be such a peaceful experience to hear the sound of your soft-spoken voice and discover how my heart and soul felt at the sound and sight of your soft-spoken spirit. And wondering too, if you are still that way after all these 47 years that have gone by.

Carolyn: “What would you like me to read to you, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, if you like to read, Carolyn, I would like for you to read anything that you enjoy reading; that way, hopefully, you might enjoy the experience, too; and then it will be a happy experience for both of us; and it would be more interesting to be hearing something that is of interest and enjoyment to you. And, perhaps, we could talk afterwards about the reading. And you might be genuinely interested in the conversation about a subject you care about.”

Carolyn: “OK, Mark. I happen to like children’s literature; so, let’s begin this venture reading something that isn’t too controversial – like a Nancy Drew story, OK?”

Mark: “Yes, that is very OK, Carolyn. I really enjoyed reading The Hardy Boys stories while growing up – and own a few Nancy Drew stories, too. I noticed that Nancy Drew and her friends had more in-depth thoughts and conversations than the Hardy boys and their friends. And dialogue is a favorite thing when I write.”

Carolyn: “And why is that, Mark?”

Mark: “I guess, for me, conversation is much more meaningful than everything else that is going on in a story – like plot and setting and scenery.”

Carolyn: “And why is that Mark?”

Mark: “Well, Jesus said, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” And the things of the heart seem to me to be much more meaningful than whatever is going on in the world that lies in wickedness.”

Carolyn: “Let us begin then, with the very first story in the Nancy Drew series: “The Secret of the Old Clock,” by Carolyn Keene, alright?”

Mark: “Alright, Carolyn. Starting at the beginning is a good place to start – just like God’s Word that starts with: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” -Genesis 1:1, 2. ESV Study Bible.

Carolyn: “Chapter One: “The Rescue.” “Nancy Drew, an attractive girl of eighteen, was driving home along a country road in her new, dark-blue convertible. She had just delivered some legal papers for her father. “It was sweet of Dad to give me this car for my birthday,” she thought. “And it’s fun to help him in his work.” Her father, Carson Drew, a well-known lawyer in their home town of River Heights, frequently discussed puzzling aspects of cases with his blonde, blue-eyed daughter. Smiling, Nancy said to herself, “Dad depends on my intuition.”

Mark: “Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Yes, Mark?”

Mark: “I really enjoy hearing the sound of your voice, Carolyn. It’s different than it was when you were seven years old on Great Island of Galilee.”

Carolyn: “Would you like me to continue, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn, if you are willing.  Carolyn, are you enjoying this reading?”

Carolyn: “Yes, I am, Mark.”

Mark: “It is very important to me that you enjoy what we are doing, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “And why is that Mark?”

Mark: “It is because your happiness is very important to me.”

Carolyn: “And why is my happiness important to you, Mark?”

Mark: “When you love someone, you just want their happiness.”

Carolyn: “And why is that Mark?”

Mark: “Because true love is about the other; that is how love works; it happens when the heart opens up to someone else; it can only flow outwardly to the other. Therefore, there must be another; there must be an object for the heart to love. If the heart does not prefer someone more than itself, it will not open but merely remain alone and contented with itself.”

Carolyn: “An instant later she gasped in horror. From the lawn of a house just ahead of her a little girl about five years of age had darted into the roadway. A van, turning out of the driveway of the house, was barely fifty feet away from her. As the driver vigorously sounded the horn in warning, the child became confused and ran directly in front of the van. Miraculously, the little girl managed to cross the road safely and pull herself up onto a low wall, which formed one side of a bridge. But the next second, as the van sped away, the child lost her balance and toppled off the wall out of sight.”

Mark: “Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Yes, Mark?”

Mark: “Carolyn, could we just have a conversation, now, please?”

Carolyn: “A conversation about what, Mark?”

Mark: “I was just wondering if you write, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Yes, Mark, I do write.”

Mark: “What kind of writing do you enjoy doing, if you will forgive me for inquiring, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Well, I hope you won’t be scandalized to hear this, Mark; I enjoy writing erotic literature.”

Mark: “Oh . . . well, I’ve read a little erotic literature; so, I’m not scandalized.”

Carolyn: “And did you like it?”

Mark: “Well, it was exciting; but, when it comes to reading I prefer something more thoughtful – things that are of the heart more than the body.”

Carolyn: “But, you’re a Christian, aren’t you, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes.”

Carolyn: “So, how can you fit that type of literature into your life? Isn’t that wrong for a Christian, considering what the Holy Spirit has said – for example in Romans 8?”

Romans 8 ESV – Life in the Spirit – There is therefore – Bible Gateway

Mark: “I just don’t know what to say about all that, Carolyn. It seems to be a very complicated issue.”

Carolyn: “Well, maybe the only way is to be married. Isn’t it written that “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing and shall receive favor of the LORD.”?

Mark: “Yes, it is so written.”

Carolyn: “And isn’t it also written that “the marriage bed is undefiled.”?

Mark: “Yes.”

Carolyn: “So, why don’t you just get married, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, it isn’t a simple thing to just get married.”

Carolyn: “Why not?”

Mark: “I can’t just go to a store and find the right one for me on the shelf in the spouse department and bring her to the cashier and buy her; and take her home with me and unwrap her and see how she fits into my heart and soul and mind and spirit.”

Carolyn: “Well, that’s certainly true; finding the right spouse is not easy.”

Mark: “For me, it seems like it is impossible.”

Carolyn: “Well, it is also written that: “If any man thinks he knows something he knows nothing yet as he ought to know; but if any one loves God he is known by God.” So, having admitted that, Mark, may I merely give you my thoughts about your situation of being single?”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Isn’t it also written that if you are born again while being single then you should remain that way?”

Mark: “Yes.”

Carolyn: So then, why don’t you just remain single? Why don’t you just accept it?”

Mark: “Maybe I should. And maybe I cannot do anything else about it, if that be God’s will.”

Carolyn: “And another thing, Mark: Things will change, eventually.”

Mark: “What do you mean, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Time and life bring changes to us even if we don’t make those changes ourselves. For example: we get older and then most of us die; and after death there is a judgment concerning where we will spend Eternity; and there will be a resurrection; and also a regeneration of heaven and earth and of our bodies. So, perhaps, you can find encouragement in God’s Word that changes are coming.”

Mark: “Thank you, Carolyn, for encouraging me with those Scriptures. You are a blessing.”

Carolyn: “You are welcome, Mark.”

Mark: “Am I really welcome, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “What are you asking me, Mark?”

Mark: “Is there a place in your heart for a friend, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “What kind of friend, Mark?”

Mark: “Oh, I don’t know  . . . any old kind of friend, maybe – maybe a maybe mark kind of friend. It’s May, you know. Maybe a May Day kind of friend.”

Carolyn: “And what exactly is a May Day kind of friend, maybe mark?”

Mark: “Maybe we can find out if we give it a chance.”

Carolyn: “What do you mean by “it,” Mark?”

Mark: “Friendship to begin with – and maybe Love to keep it going forever.”

Carolyn: “You want a friendship with Love that keeps going forever, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, I do, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Why, Mark?”

Mark: “I want to love somebody – but not just any body – I want to love a lady.”

Carolyn: “Why a lady?”

Mark: “A lady . . .  a lovely lady . . .  is what, I mean — Who is what my heart yearns to love.”

Carolyn: “And why is that, Mark?”

Mark: “That is just naturally what, I mean Who, my heart wants to give his love to.”

Carolyn: “And why is that, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, maybe that is what, I mean Who my heart needs.”

Carolyn: “And why does your heart need a lady?”

Mark: “Well, maybe it has to do with the loveliness of a lady; and maybe God wants me, I mean my heart, to become — as lovely in love as a lady is in her loveliness.”

Carolyn: “What world of our own, Mark?”

Mark: “The kingdom of God that Jesus told us about – for believers on Him — by believing in the gospel of Christ that Jesus and His disciples preached.”

Carolyn: “The kingdom of God is “a world of our own” – you believe? How is God’s kingdom a world of our own? Isn’t it God’s kingdom? And doesn’t the whole world belong to Him, too?”

Mark: “Yes, it does.”

Chapter Two

Holding Hands

Mark: “Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Yes, Mark?”

Mark: “I was just wondering if we could go out for a walk?”

Carolyn: “Why, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, besides reading and listening to stories it might make a nice change to just go out and enjoy some fresh air and sunlight and exercise — in God’s world.”

Carolyn: “OK Mark; let’s go out for a walk.”

Mark: “Thank you, Carolyn. I really appreciate your agreeable spirit.” So, Carolyn and Mark go outside and begin walking. After about five minutes of walking together Mark begins thinking about holding Carolyn’s hand.”

Mark: “Carolyn, may I hold your hand as we walk?”

Carolyn: “Why do you want to hold my hand, Mark?”

Mark: “I believe it would be a blessing to hold hands as we walk together – in God’s kingdom, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Maybe it would also be a blessing to me, Mark, if you told me how it would be a blessing.”

Mark: “Well, Carolyn, I just have this intimation in my heart that, as soon as our hands touch, something is going to happen.”

Carolyn: “What is going to happen, Mark?”

Mark: “Something powerful and lovely may happen, Carolyn  — like in a love song – and a love story.”

Carolyn: “What love song?”

Carolyn takes Mark’s hand and they continue to walk together. “Mark, do you have any other love songs in mind as we are walking?”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “What is the title — if you remember it, Mark?”

Mark: “The title is: The Power of Love.

Carolyn: “That is a very powerful song about love! Mark, is that the kind of love you seek?”

Mark: “Well, considering my own limitations, I suppose a soft-spoken kind of lady would be more compatible for me.”

Carolyn: “What limitations, Mark?”

Mark: “Emotional limitations.”

Carolyn: “You have emotional limitations, Mark? What does that mean, I wonder?”

Mark: “Well, just listening to that song has a powerful effect on me. Sometimes, I imagine my nervous system is like a radio with very fine wiring; and so, high voltage surges would just overwhelm my circuit boards. And there is a hymn whose title may be very telling.”

Carolyn: “What hymn is that, Mark?”

Mark: “Little is much when God is in it.”

Mark: “Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Yes, Mark?”

Mark: “Just needed to know you’re there, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “I’m here, Mark.”

Mark: “Would you read to me again, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “What shall we read this time, Mark?”

Mark: “Would you enjoy reading to me something that you’ve written, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Well, Mark, are you confident that those delicate emotional circuits of yours can stand the power of love in my own writing? I write even more keenly than Carolyn Keene, Mark.”

Mark: “After confiding with you, Carolyn, as we have just done; and hearing from your understanding and reasonable heart and mind, I’m confident in you that we can; and noticing that you still have a soft-spoken way about you in words and thoughts and spirit, I feel more than confident that we can stand the power of love flowing within us.”

Carolyn: “And what if I’m not always soft-spoken, Mark? What if I get upset sometimes; and I don’t sound reasonable when I’m feeling like a storm with lightning and thunder and volcanoes and mighty wrath?”

Mark: “Well, Carolyn . . . could you just write it down and then just read it to me? Maybe we could confide together about whatever is stirring within your heart and soul and mind and spirit.”

Carolyn: “Well . . . maybe mark I could do that. We’ll just have to wait and see. OK?”

Mark: “OK, Carolyn. And just one more thing?”

Carolyn: “What is it, Mark?”

Mark: “When we need something else to do besides reading and writing and walking . . . could we listen to music and maybe dance a slow dance?”

Carolyn: “What music would you like to listen to and dance with me, Mark?”

Mark: “The kind of music that you like listening to, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Why do you want it to be my kind of music, Mark?”

Mark: “That is the way of love, Carolyn: to prefer the other rather than the self.”

Carolyn: “Well, thank you, Mark, for putting me before yourself. I really like that about you. Right now, I would just like to enjoy a cup of tea and sit peacefully with you, maybe.”

Mark: “I would love to make a cup tea for you, Carolyn. How do you like your tea, dear?”

Carolyn: “Let’s go into the kitchen, and make it together, Mark. I’d love to show you how I like it.”

Mark: “I would love that, Carolyn.”

Only God can make a man like John Wayne – and only “for the movies,” I suppose. [I don’t really know. I’m not John Wayne] Look what happened to McCord. It isn’t rewarding to be a man in a world that is filled with spiritual darkness – that often admires violence and money – that cannot understand the things of the Spirit – that doesn’t want to be born again by the grace of God and the faith of Jesus Christ – that doesn’t want to wait on the LORD for His kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth – “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” [the God of armies — the armies of heaven]. -Zechariah 4:6 in The Bible.

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Let’s pray together, Mark. Jesus said, ‘Where two or three are gathered together in My Name there am I in the midst of them.’”

Mark: “OK, Carolyn. What should we pray for?”

Carolyn: “Jesus said, ‘And when you pray do not use many words for your heavenly Father knows what you need before you ask Him.’ And it is also written: ‘The Name of the LORD is a strong tower. The righteous man runs into it and is safe.’ So, maybe all we have to do in prayer is to hold His Name in our hearts and minds. Just be in His Name – by faith – and let Him take care of us. His Holy Spirit will speak to our hearts as needed – for our understanding of His will – as we wait on Him with our hearts open to Him every moment of the day.”

Mark: “OK, Nancy. I mean, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “OK, Frank. I mean, Mark. I mean, maybe . . . maybe mark. Is that your nickname, Mark? Maybe mark?”

Mark: “maybe it is. I don’t know. Your birthday is in May, Carolyn. Late May, I suppose. No one ever told me exactly when it is. May is a beautiful month in Springtime. Maybe it’s even better than April – which used to be my favorite month of Spring.”

Carolyn: “How did the change take place for you – from April to May, I mean?”

Mark: “Well, Carolyn, as the years have gone by in my life, I’ve come around to appreciating that May is warmer than April; and the trees are greener and the flowers are more in bloom in May. Happy birthday, Carolyn – whenever it is in May. And here is a song especially for you – in the Name of the Lord Jesus:

Carolyn: “Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “I must confide something to you, Mark.”

Mark: “What is it, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “I’m bothered by the “McCord’s Way” episode in this letter. Why did you put that in here? The shooting scenes . . .  that was not lovely at all.”

Mark: “I’m bothered by it, too.”

Carolyn: “Why did you insert it, then?”

Mark: “Well, violence like that is not God’s Way. I guess it is sinful man’s way – like what Cain did to his brother Abel. And, maybe, because there are many who don’t know God’s Way – they need to see in words and maybe in video that ungodly man’s way and compare it in their minds to God’s gracious Way of faith in His Son; and love and peace; and turning away from [repenting] of the world’s way. McCord left that town – as Lot left Sodom by heeding the warning of the angel of the LORD who told him to go out from there – before the wrath of God fell on the town and destroyed it. So, even though the “McCord’s Way” video wasn’t nice, it is important that the reader see it and take this message to heart – or else they too will be left behind and suffer like Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Carolyn: “Well, since you put it that way, Mark, I understand now, that you are not advocating violence, but rather, warning against remaining in the spiritual darkness of this world and, instead, receiving the love of the truth – God’s Word is the truth – including the gospel of God, the gospel of truth, the gospel of Jesus Christ – and the Lord Jesus Christ himself – the Way the Truth and the Life. He is the Light by which the spiritual darkness of the world can be seen for what it is – deceptive and deceitful – as the serpent – who represents “the god of this world – deceived Eve in the garden of Eden.”

Mark: “Amen.”

Carolyn: “Now there is something else bothering me, Mark.”

Mark: “What is it, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “You seem to be mixing two things together in your writing: love for a lady – and telling the gospel. Is it impure to mix those two things together? Shouldn’t they be kept separate – for the sake of purity? And isn’t it confusing for the listener or reader to see you trying to do two different things at the same time?”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn. What you just said makes sense.”

Carolyn: “Then why don’t you just write about the gospel in one blog post; and write your love letters in a separate blog post?”

Mark: “I don’t know why, Carolyn. Maybe I’m just an imperfect writer; maybe I’m just not pure enough to write that perfectly and purely, yet.”

Carolyn: “Maybe we can work on that, Mark. And pray about it, together. And confide in each other about it again and again until we get it write, I mean right.”

Mark: “OK, Carolyn. I’m willing. And thank you for honestly confiding your thoughts about my writing with me. I love your soft-spoken authenticity and genuineness. It makes our conversation meaningful and real while remaining in the love and grace and kindness and peace of God our Savior. You are so lovely, Carolyn. My heart adores you.”

My Eyes Adored You – Frankie Valli – Four Seasons – w/lyrics – YouTube

Carolyn: “Mark, now, I have another concern.”

Mark: “What is it, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Aren’t we supposed to only adore God?”

Mark: “I don’t know for sure about that one, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Well, what if two people are true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ; doesn’t that mean that the Lord is in them – by His Spirit? And so, if the Lord God is in them by His Spirit – and if they love Him and love each other – then how could they not adore God in each other?”

Mark: “Exactly, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “What does “exactly” mean, Mark?”

Mark: “It means I agree with you, Carolyn. It means that your understanding heart must be infused by our Lord’s Holy Spirit. And my heart just adores His Holy Spirit in you, lady Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Now why are you adding that word before my name, Mark?”

Mark: “It feels sweet and lovely in my heart, Carolyn, to sometimes say your name that way.”

Carolyn: “Why?”

Mark: “Maybe that’s how my love goes out to you – from my heart to yours, sometimes – in adoration.”

Carolyn: “Why or how is that Mark?”

Mark: “Maybe the Shekinah glory of the Lord is beginning to shine in the hearts of His children. And maybe, they are beginning to feel His Shekinah glory in their hearts when they are in the presence of someone especially special to them – someone who is a container of His glory and loveliness – such as a lady of the Lord, a lady who believes in Him from her heart, who radiates His presence – by His Spirit in her heart and mind and soul and spirit and body.”

Carolyn: “Mark, one last question.”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn?”

Carolyn: “Why are you writing this blog post as if you were actually writing to me? I don’t recall that we ever spoke to each other while you were friends with my sister in 1974. I was only 7 years old then.”

Mark: “Well, Carolyn, your sister won’t write to me.”

Carolyn: “And what does that have to do with me?”

Mark: “I just wanted to write to you, that’s all. It seemed like an enjoyable idea to me – to write to Eileen’s sister, Carolyn. It intrigued me to imagine corresponding with you. There’s something about your family – to me.”

Carolyn: “And what is that, Mark? What is it about my family?”

Mark: “Eileen in my class at St. Charles School from 4th grade through 8th grades. And beautiful Glen Road. And the summer of 1974. Eileen being very special to me.”

Carolyn: “OK, Mark. Thank you for your honest answers to my questions.”

Mark: “You’re welcome, Carolyn.”

Carolyn: “Mark, I want you to know that I really enjoyed reading with you and having this discussion with you. Am I welcome to contact you if I should want to write to you about anything at all?”

Mark: “Yes, Carolyn. You are welcome to write to me. You might be able to do so through my blog, at first. And, if you want to, we might email. Eileen may be able to give you my address and email and phone number. She is welcome to share that information about me with you.”
