Random Thoughts the Night of January 23rd, 2022
The 14th Anniversary of the Day Charcoal and I Moved into John F. Kennedy Manor in 2008
From a breaking down mind and body that is feeling like a battered old fence swaying in the wind and liable to fall down if a strong puff of wind should just give it one last blow that it could not endure. It’s 11:34 PM and I went to bed a half hour ago but couldn’t fall asleep; so, I got up; and going to try to write somethings that are in my mind as I was waiting for sleep to come but it didn’t. I was thinking of Louis Armstrong’s beautiful song “What a Wonderful World.” And thinking of making a dedication to Woonsocket, Rhode Island – my life-long hometown – with that song. And including the surrounding towns of Bellingham, and Blackstone and Cumberland and North Smithfield and Lincoln and Manville. And was also thinking about a possible story that is centered on some characters of an earlier story(s) about Gretchen and Carol and their stepdad, Daniel Boone Jackson who met his wife-to-be by way of his two daughters going to school; and he had to go to the PTA meetings where he met their teacher, Jennifer McCarthy who was a young and pretty widow. And things happened fast for all of them. Gretchen and Carol grew up and wanted to go into business. And Jennifer McCarthy opened a bookstore called “Food for Thought Bookstore.” And it was in The Unity Building in Woonsocket – in the very same place where there once was another bookstore: “The Upper Room Bookstore” that sold Bibles. And Krylo Dance Studio was nearby it. And Daniel Boone Jackson started a church that was also located in The Unity Building: “The Living Word Church.” And Gretchen’s business was called “Faith & Hope Department Store.” It was in The Hope Building across the street from the train station at Depot Square where she had met her future stepfather years before — when he was being Santa Claus and Gretchen was a very lonely and homeless little girl desperately in need of help. And Carol, her stepsister, opened a store at Depot Square, too: “Carol’s Food for Life Groceries.” And she was also pondering calling it “God and Country Supermarket.” It was across the street from where Woonsocket’s historic McCarthy’s Department Store had been a century ago. And Daniel Boone Jackson’s wife – Jennifer McCarthy Jackson — may have been a descendant of the family that owned and operated that former department store.

Now it’s 12:06 AM. A new day has been born. I’m going to have a little cheerios and oats with powdered milk; and then, maybe I can go back to bed and sleep for 5 or 6 hours.

Wondering what it was like for a young girl growing up in the pretty white house on glorious Glen Road in the North End of Woonsocket, Rhode Island in the 1950s and ‘60s. The world being as it is and us humans being as we are, maybe it wasn’t as glorious as it seems; maybe it was difficult; maybe it was an eye-opener to realize that even when you’re young and pretty and healthy and living in a neighborhood as lovely as Mr. Rogers neighborhood life is still a struggle.

How do you suppose God feels about those who don’t believe in Him; who don’t acknowledge Him; who don’t love Him above all else?
