I grew up reading children’s mystery stories and Sherlock Holmes, too; however, I’m not a youngster anymore at 72. Listening to the songs included in this post makes me very emotional. When I was a child, I wasn’t emotional at all. I must be changing as I live. I’m not the same as I was. Honestly, I often feel like crying while listening to love songs. Mysteriously, there is something sweet in the feeling of crying – maybe it’s sweet sorrow – it seems like that to me.
An Evening Walk into The North End of Woonsocket

A few days later, on May 22nd, I recalled a great event that happened in the United States of America – the volcanic explosion at Mount Saint Helens in Washington State on May 18th, 1980. And a few days after that event in 1980, I came outside to my car – a 1979 white Dodge Aspen [the only new car I ever owned] – and noticed a fine yellow powder that had dusted my car during the night – and understood it was the volcanic ash from Mount Saint Helens volcanic explosion that had brought this dusting down upon my car in Woonsocket, Rhode Island – approximately 3000 miles away from Her great event in Washington State.

Eileen, I was 22 years old during our romance of “The Summer of ’74.” And you were 21. In October you would turn 22; but our summer romance was over before October. In mid-August it ended – when we got back to Woonsocket from our bus trip to Montreal, Canada with the R.I. Hikers Club. And there are eleven months difference in our ages. And your month is 10 and my month is 11.

Dear Eileen, It’s May.
We’ve had some meetings – you and I — in the month of May — during our lifetime.
May I tell you please about my walk this evening in The Month of May – on the 18th day – Saturday evening it was.
I walked by our old school lot where there is only short grass and about eleven trees standing there now. I was born in the eleventh month. Our old red-brick schoolhouse has been gone for many years – just as our youth and school days there are also gone forever, I guess – except in my memory. Often when I think of you, Eileen, I remember something someone said about me living in the Past. May Be it’s because someone very special to me is still there – in the Past – in my Past. She just never passed away from my heart and memory. She’s still there – alive in my heart and in my memories. May Be the love of Eileen is living there. Then I stopped at our old church building – St. Charles Church.
I saw you there a few times at Saturday evening Mass in the early 1970s. Once or twice, you sat on the right side near me; and so, we walked out of church after Mass almost together in silence after Mass. And then we walked down the staircase on the right side almost together. I counted the steps this evening. Besides liking words, I also notice and think about the significance of numbers. There are 9 stairsteps going up the last staircase, Eileen – just as the number 9 is in your birthdate. Then there are two steps halfway down – followed by 5 more steps to the sidewalk. All together that makes 16 steps, Eileen. I like basic arithmetic, too, Eileen. The number 16 reminds me of a sweet song called “Sixteen Candles.” You may remember that song, Eileen. It May have been famous during our early teenage years. Now I’m thinking of another heart-touching song from long ago: “Teen Angel.” And I’m also remembering how you said I’m living in the past. May be that’s because the past never passed away, for me. May Be it’s still Present in my mind and heart and soul. May Be Eileen is still Present with me. May Be Eileen just never passes away. May be she’s always here in my heart. Your youthful prettiness really impressed me as a young teenager in 7th and 8th grades, Eileen. And what I’m saying here in the Present at 72 years old is not flattery, Eileen. It’s simply the truth. And May Be, Eileen, when you breathed into me standing on the beach – George’s Beach — at Galilee, RI during “The Summer of ‘74” that also impressed me — maybe forever and ever you impressed me, Eileen. May Be Your Breath is still in my lungs, Eileen. May Be I never exhaled Your Living Breath, Eileen. May Be I will always be in that Living Breathing Kiss we kissed on George’s Beach at Galilee, Rhode Island – just on the other side of the breachway – where Jerusalem, Rhode Island was and is on the other side. May Be, Eileen, there is something Biblical about us. May Be True God is in this matter of You and me – or You and I — and “The Summer of Seventy-Four” and a kiss and a breath and romance and a Life and a Love . . . and things Above – that we haven’t seen before . . .

Eileen, on my walk last evening [it’s now 12:16 AM on Sunday, May 19th] I also walked on Prospect Street and Spring Street and Glen Road. As I approached Glen Road from Spring Street, I counted the letters in that street name: 8 letters. I believe 8 is my number, Eileen. And 9 is your number. And 8 times 9 = 72 – which is my age, now. Then I walked up the hill of Glen Road; and counted the houses to 116 Glen Road. The house you and your family lived in is the 9th house, Eileen. And there is a stately and beautiful beech tree in the backyard of that residence, Eileen. If you were willing, Eileen, you could tell me so many things about your growing up there in that white house on Glen Road. I stopped on the sidewalk and looked at that house. I wondered which windows were your windows when you looked outside from your room and what view you saw out those windows and with your Irish eyes. And it would be very interesting to me, Eileen, to hear your memories of living there in the 1960s.

According to a booklet I own that lists names and their meanings for boys and girls, the name Eileen means “light.” And my paternal grandmother’s name is Lucia – which according to that same booklet means “Lustrous;” and my maternal grandmother’s name is Dora which means “a gift.” And my mother’s name is Beulah which means married. So, why am I still single at 72 ?

Eileen, when you first came to St. Charles School in September of 1961, we were just beginning 4th grade. You hadn’t caught my attention yet. I was only 9 years old; and you were 8 years old. 8 is my number.

As I listen to these songs a story title keeps coming to mind from the Nancy Drew mystery series. The story is the second one in the series about Nancy’s many mysterious adventures: The Hidden Staircase. I’ve only read a few pages of the story. And it was a long time ago. I don’t remember the beginning chapter. Just noticed there are 8 letters in the word remember. Another thing about the number 8 is that, if it is laid down on its side, it looks just like the symbol for eternity. Laying down has to do with resting. And there is something in the Bible about rest. In the New Testament, in the 19th book, Hebrews, in chapters 3 and 4, rest is mentioned several times. And, at 72, rest is becoming a daily part of my life now – not only at night – but during the day, too, I rest. And often times, at night, I only get about 2 hours of sleep; so, it is understandable that I must rest during the day, also.

‘They shall not enter my rest.’”
And in 4:1 of Hebrews it is written:

May Be we are all in waiting for the regeneration of all things in glory – when True God brings the new heavens and the new earth into Being – and there will no longer be any maybees about it — when He resurrects the faithfully believing dead and regenerates them along with the living believers who are waiting faithfully for His return – His Second Coming in Glory. May Be that’s why I’m still single. The newness of Life has not happened, yet. We are not yet living in the new heavens and the new earth – when True God’s Creation will at last be perfect. Perhaps, the Lord is keeping us all in waiting for Him.
