A Name of Recognition for the Lady Librarian
Remembering Miss McDonald, the Librarian
She was the Librarian at the Social Branch of the Harris-Institute Library
In
Woonsocket, Rhode Island –
During the 1950s and ‘60s – and maybe later . . . I don’t know.
I only remember her from my own childhood years going to that library.
I’ve been having thoughts about her recently in connection with the intersection of Social, Clinton, East School, and Elm Streets. The library was fairly close to that intersection. And I believe she also lived in a house near that intersection. It may have been a house close by Social Street School – maybe she went to Social Street School herself when she was a child. It seems that it would be a lovely thing for the City of Woonsocket to give that intersection her name – in recognition of Her Service to Woonsocket. So, this is what those thoughts inspired me to write.
God’s Glorious Gift to Woonsocket, Rhode Island
Miss McDonald the Librarian Memorial Square.
And then I began having thoughts about the former Social Street School House at that intersection —
The Intersection of Social, Clinton, East School and Elm Streets. Woonsocket’s Unnamed Intersection. Maybe, for all these years, that intersection has been “in waiting” for Woonsocket to Give Her a Name, A Name of Remembrance.
So, I got to thinking about The Olde Social Street School Building –
Something about “The Second Floor” of That Olde Schoolhouse.
The Second Floor – because the Social Branch of The Harris-Institute Library on Social Street had been on the second floor of the building where Gagne Shoe Store had been on the first floor. It was approximately – but not exactly — across the street from where Pinault Hardware Store was located – not far from Woonsocket’s famous Social Corner.
What if the Olde Social Street School House was renovated and made into something new?
What if some dearly remembered places in Woonsocket’s Cherished Past were brought back – or, as Charles Dickens put it in his famous novel, “A Tale of Two Cities” – “Recalled to Life” ? Well, sort of . . .
********
And the bare and creaking wooden staircase leads up to a landing that is just like the landing to the
Social Branch of the Harris-Institute Library
Where . . .
Miss McDonald really worked in the 1950s and ‘60s.
There was a water fountain at the landing at the top of the stairs.
And
The Doorway Straight Ahead
Opened into The Children’s Room.
And in the New Library . . .
Where the New Miss McDonald’s Librarian has “A Children’s Hour” when she reads stories and poetry to the children gathered around her in children’s chairs to quietly listen and hear from Her about many wonderful things in the realms of Literature.
And The New Miss McDonald’s Librarian is The Most Beautiful and Kindly and Lovely Lady of All. And everyone in Her Presence is immediately Touched in Their Hearts by Adoring Love for Her. And this Adoring Love comes from the Spirit of the Lord Her God – for She Is the Lady of the Lord.
And the door to the right at the top of the landing opens into the older children’s room — where young adults of all ages – even The Truly Elderly Who Were Children Themselves Once Upon a Time – And May Become Young Children Once Again – By the Grace of God and The Faith of Jesus Christ and With the Help of His Holy Spirit — may come in to browse the book bookshelves for their reading pleasure in perfect peace and love and joy. And all the chairs and couches are very comfortable to sit on — for the young and for the elderly older “children.” And there is a snack bar – just like the one at Jupiter’s on Main Street in the 1950s and 1960s. And the people can look out the windows and see the people outside walking by; and the blue sky above and the birds flying by.
And there is a Music Room where people who love to play the piano and the guitar and the violin may visit; and quietly play their musical instruments for those who love to listen to peaceful music.
And there is a dance studio – just like the dance studio that was on Clinton Street years ago in Woonsocket – Krylo’s Dance Studio it was called – where children learned to dance and ballet. It was in the same building where “The Upper Room Bookstore” was located above Beaupre’s — near Depot Square. Maybe the children and young adults of all ages could learn square dancing there . . .
“Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.” -Acts of the Apostles 1: 12-14. ESV Study Bible.

“No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate.
“But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married.

In 1966 our class at St. Charles School was having a play called “The Queen of the Prom.”
And during practices for the play on Saturday Mornings, Nancy Rock, I think it was Nancy, brought records to the practices; and we got to those practices early on those Saturday mornings and we would hear songs being played in the background. “Monday, Monday,” by The Momas and the Papas was the song that I most remember hearing in the auditorium on the 3rd floor of St. Charles School House.

Eileen was the classmate at St. Charles School in May of 1966 who portrayed the queen of the prom. And Robert Henault portrayed her boyfriend. And then . . . 8 years later, Eileen and I met at a Sunday afternoon hike with the Rhode Island Hikers Club. It was May of 1974. Eileen was 21 and I was 22. And we had a wonderful “Summer of ‘74” romance. And in August it came to an end. We often went to George’s Beach in Galilee, Rhode Island during that summer. And just across the breech way of water was Jerusalen, Rhode Island. Eileen told me it was Jerusalem while we were on our beach blanket. It always seemed significant to me that our summer romance happened there in Galilee next to Jerusalem in Rhode Island.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall their be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” -Revelation 21: 1-4. “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” -1 John 2: 15-17. ESV Study Bible.

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!
“For who has known the mind of the Lord,
Or who has been his counselor?’
“Or who has given a gift to him
That he might be repaid?’
“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” -Romans 11: 29-36. ESV Study Bible.

My grandmother Lucia Roy Richer went to Social Street School; and so did my classmate at St. Charles School and at Woonsocket High School, William Roberge; and my girlfriend in 1985-’86, Amy Herzog, was at Social Street School. And my mother Beulah Ann Wilbur may have gone there for a time.
