Apathy
Wondering if . . .
The slogan and motto of Apathy is:
“I don’t care.”
I got that notion from having often heard someone use that statement.
So, if that is your reply to the state of things in the world – or your abrupt and concluding final word about a topic in conversation — then perhaps you are apathetic.
And, perhaps, Apathy is a spiritual condition.
I don’t recall anyone in the Bible saying those words.
And, perhaps, Apathy is an understandable attitude of a heart that has seen so much of the wickedness in the world that it knows not what else to do but give up and declare with finality:
“I don’t care!”
Well, there is something that we can do about the wickedness in the world.
And that “something” is:
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride is possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” -1 John 2: 15-17 ESV Study Bible.
“Then they said to him, ‘What must we do, to be doing the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’” -John 6: 28-29 ESV Study Bible.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” -Jesus [John 3: 16-21 ESV Study Bible].
Revelation 3: 14-19 ESV Study Bible.
“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation. I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.” -Revelation 3: 14-19 ESV Study Bible.
