Something Happened to Soft_Tessa
She was a young school girl and her friends called her Softy.
She wasn’t really soft, though –
She was tough.
If anyone put her to the test
She could show them!
She even had a secret saying in her heart –
“I’ll show you, saith the Lord God Almighty!”
“Yes, I AM will show you ALL –
As you become able to see and understand – by the Helper – My Holy Spirit!”
The Spirit of the Lord.
The Spirit of truth and understanding.
“Prepare ye the way of the Lord!
Make His paths straight!” -John the Baptist.
And one day – the first day of 4th-grade it was –
In early September –
The same grade where and when Eileen entered 4th-grade at St. Charles School in Woonsocket, Rhode Island – in space-Time history —
A new boy came to Tessa’s classroom – the classroom where Tessa was in 4th grade.
And it just so happened that his desk was right next to Soft_Tessa’s desk.
There was also a song that was close to Soft-Tessa’s heart.
A song that’s been around for ages –
Frosty the Snowman.
The new boy’s name was Frank – just like Frank Hardy of the detective books and mystery stories.
Soft_Tessa loved to read those stories. She felt like she was in love with Frank Hardy.
She had a crush on the new boy named Frank –
But she didn’t want anyone to know it.
So, Soft_Tessa made up a nickname for Frank –
To hide her true feelings for him – even from her own consciousness.
She called him, Frosty –
After Frosty the Snowman –Who was close to her heart.
So, Frank – not knowing that Tessa had a crush on him –just for fun –
Began calling Soft_Tessa
Tess of the D’Urbervilles.
After the title character in a novel by Thomas Hardy he had read the summer before 4th grade began – in 1961.
In his innocence he had no idea what affect that name might have on Tessa.
Tessa went to the library that afternoon after school and borrowed that novel by Thomas Hardy. And she read it all — and found it remarkable that the author’s last name was Hardy – just like her secret love – Frank Hardy’s — last name.
And for his part, Frank — the new boy in school, liked reading Nancy Drew stories. His attention was first drawn to those stories because his last name was Drew—just like Nancy Drew’s last name. And he liked to draw, too. His very first drawing was of Nancy Drew. In his pen-and-ink sketch [just like the sketches that appeared in the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew stories] Nancy was writing at her desk in his drawing of her. And he liked to imagine she was writing a love letter to him. And he wanted to put down his drawing pencil and pick up his pen and write a love letter to Nancy Drew – and tell her how his heart felt drawn to hers. And when he read that Nancy Drew lived in River Heights, he wondered how romantic it would be to go fishing down by the river in River Heights and meet Nancy – maybe it would be like Tom Sawyer meeting Becky Thatcher – in the story by Mark Twain.

Tessa was puzzled about why Frank was calling her “Tess of the d’Urbervilles.” The next day at school she decided to talk to Frank.
Tessa: “Frank, I don’t understand why you’re calling me, Tess of the d’Urbervilles.”
Frank: “It’s just because you’re calling me Frosty.”
Tessa: “Well, to be honest with you, Frank I have a crush on you; but, I didn’t want you to know about it – so, I made up a nickname for you – to hide my true feelings for you.”
Frank: “Well, now that I understand you, Tessa, I won’t call you that other name anymore.”
Tessa: “Thank you, Frank. I appreciate that.”
Frank: “You’re welcome, Tessa. And I appreciate your honesty.”
Tessa: “Did you read any other stories during summer vacation, Frank?”
Frank: “Yes, I also read a long Sherlock Holmes story.”
Tessa: “What is the title ?”
Frank: “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”
Tessa: “Frank do you have a special interest in stories with the letters “ervilles” in the title?”
Frank: “Not really. It’s just a coincidence, I guess.”
Tessa: “Do you like music, Frank?”
Frank: “Yes, I find music very heart-touching and beautiful.”
Tessa: “Tell me the name of a song you find heart-touching and beautiful, Frank.”
Frank: “My Eyes Adored You – Frankie Valli – Four Seasons – w/lyrics”

Tessa: “Frank when I listened to that song – and heard the lyric about Barnegat Bay – it reminded me of the city where Frank and Joe Hardy lived –Bayport – on the coast of Barmet Bay. And now I’m hoping that you and I will walk home from school together – every day, Frank – and become close friends.”
Frank: “I’d like to walk home from school with you, Tessa – and become close friends with you –and maybe we shall visit the library together sometimes.”
Tessa: “Alright, Frank! Let’s start walking together today. Okay ?”
Frank: “Okay. And there’s another thing, Tessa.”
Tessa: “What is this other thing, Frank?”
Frank: “We have a new subject in school this year – a subject we never had before – and which I understand I will only study this year of fourth grade.”
Tessa: “What subject is that, Frank?”
Frank: “Geography.”
Tessa: “Is Geography a special interest of yours, Frank?”
Frank: “I just know that I will never forget this year in grade school, Tessa. It will be special to me for the rest of my life.”
Tessa: “I wonder if there is also a song that is special to you about this particular year of your life in school, Frank.”
Frank: “Yes, Tessa. There is a special song I will always remember about this school year.”
Tessa: “Tell me, Frank.”
Frank: “There are two versions of this song I like, Tessa.”
Tessa: “What are they, Frank?”
