Mom Used to Say . . .
“It’s always darkest before the dawn.”
It is dark now – at 3:44 AM – on the last day of May, 2026.
And the world seems bleak, too.
And, at 74-and-a-half, I’m no Spring chicken, either.
And Mom was born in mid-February – so she is an Aquarius.
And in the 1960s, there was a song called “Aquarius.”
And Aquarius has 8 letters.
And our house on Sweet Avenue in Woonsocket, Rhode Island was the 8th house on the street – whether you counted from the house at the corner of Cass Avenue — or you counted from the house at the corner of Elm Street – where the Cote’s and the Desjardins and the Mandeville’s lived – and Mrs. Aubin. And I’m a Scorpio. And Scorpio is said to be “in the 8th house.” And Mom lived to be 88. And she departed in August – the 8th month. And my Dad was born in the 8th month – August. And there is a character who appears in my writing [sometimes] named August Deepening Dawn. And beautiful music sometimes comes to mind – music such as: “This is the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius” and “Our House Is a Very, Very, Very Fine House.” And just two days ago, I was walking on Cass Avenue; and I had to stop and gaze again at the old Quonset hut where Eileen Gaouette and her one-year-older brother, Ronald, lived in the late 1950s when she and I were in first grade at St. Charles School. And my Dad would stop the station wagon and they would get into the car with Lesley and me; and we’d all go to school together. She and I May never have said a word to each other back in those days. At 7 years old I was just too young to notice girls. She was as pretty as The Prettiest Flower in The Month of May. And then after first grade I didn’t ever see Eileen Gaouette again – so far – for the rest of my lonely single life. I can only gaze upon that old Quonset hut sometimes and wonder how different things May have turned out in my life if I had spoken to Eileen. Maybe we would have become friends.

Eileen Gaouette and the Quonset Hut Hidden Behind the House That Faces Sweet Avenue.
What a sweet memory she will always be to me.
We were 7 years old in first grade
And learning to read with our teacher, Sister Mary Carlene, RSM at St. Charles School on Daniels Street. We read about Judy and her brother and their dog Spot living on Pleasant Street. Sister had us in groups that she would call to sit in a circle with her at the front of the classroom; and she would call upon us individually to read out loud a few sentences in our reader’s book.
Now in 2026 we are no longer 7; but we are in our 70s.
In my family there are 7 children – 4 brothers and 3 sisters. And we always started school in September. And Felicia was born in early September. And Janet was born in May . . .

If I did not know the Lord and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, my life would only be a long series of heart-felt memories with no ultimate meaning and no culmination and no destination – a life journey without a homecoming.
