Somethings Happened Again, Today . . .

Friday

Juneteenth 2026

June 19th.

This date may have been my parents’ wedding anniversary in 1948.

Today, I went out for a walk at 12:36 PM [I think it was that time].

My short-term memory is not perfectly reliable anymore.

I wasn’t sure which way I would take on this walk, either.

Well, I arrived at Sweet Avenue Where I Grew Up

The First 18 Years of My Life

I stopped exactly where I had stood on the last day of first grade.

It May Have Been June 17th, 1959.

I looked up Stanley Avenue –

Just as I had been doing in mid-June 1959 –

After getting home from school –

On the Last Day of First Grade —

Where and when I saw Eileen Gaouette walking down that hill of Stanley Avenue with 2 other girls with her. On that day – 67 years ago – when we were 7 – Eileen and her two young friends crossed the street and walked by me. I didn’t even know enough to say “Hi Eileen.”  She and her friends just walked on by.

I know it’s been taking like Forever – however, I finally and really want to say “Hi Eileen.”

And today, I said softly, quietly, “Hi Eileen.” As I looked up Stanley Avenue – imagining her being there.

And then as I continued walking down sweet avenue. I said, “I love you, Eileen. I love you, Eileen Gaouette. You’re the prettiest girl i ever saw in all my life.”

“Hi Eileen Gaouette.”

And then, other things began happening. 5 children of varying ages began riding their bikes down Sweet Avenue. I stopped and said Hi to each one. Two said Hi back to me. Two remained quiet. One actually snubbed me.

Reminded me of a scene in the movie, Melody. At about the one-minute mark in that movie’s music video two young people exchange a snub in the cafeteria at school.

A little while later, the one who gave me a snub look came riding his bike back up Sweet Avenue’s sidewalk. I stepped into the street to give him room to go by – the sidewalk of Sweet Avenue isn’t very wide. As he got close, I said Hi again. He remained silent. So just as he reached me, I said again – very sincerely – like I really wanted from my heart to hear him say Hi back to me. And he did. He said, “Hi.”

So, as I continued walking down Sweet Avenue, I thought that something was happening. I’m making some kind of progress. At least I can say Hi now. And some folks are saying Hi back to me.

Maybe there will someday be a National Hi Day.

First of May Bee Gees Melody 1971 Lyrics Mark Lester Tracy Hyde

Mark: “Eileen, I never heard you speak. I wonder if the sound of your voice is the most beautiful-sounding voice I ever heard in all my life. I wonder if your voice will affect my heart as your face affects my eyes . . . Eileen. I wonder if the effect of your voice and your presence and the sight of you will be like the Breathe of Heaven to me.”
