Social’s Other Corner
What might be a good name for Social’s other corner –
The Intersection of Elm Street, Social Street, East School Street and Clinton Street ?
It’s close by Social Corner
It’s on the way to Massachusetts
On the way to Blackstone and Bellingham, Massachusetts.
International Telephone and Telegraph Wire
Had a big brick building at that intersection years ago.
When dad stopped his car at the end of Elm Street at that intersection – taking us to St. Charles School early in the morning — I would read the sign on that brick building – something about telephone and telegraph wires is all I can remember. At the beginning of the “Summer of ‘74” romance, Eileen told me she almost got a job working at the telephone company. We may have been driving by the telephone company office building on Clinton Street – where Truman Drive begins.
The building is now called Gateway Commons –
The building at the corner of Elm Street and Social Street and East School Street.
It was also the home of Bancroft Tennis Racket and Rosecraft — at other times.
Woonsocket Fire Department had a fire station across the street.
It’s now the office building of
Woonsocket Housing Authority
Social Street School was at that intersection — across the street – in another brick building.
Pinault Hardware was nearby
My grandmother told me about buying things at Pinault Hardware when I was little – before I started going to school.
And
The Social Branch of Harris Institute Library was nearby –
The door to the second-floor library was immediately next to Gagne Shoe Store
And
Yvonne’s Photo Shop was nearby.
I bought photo darkroom equipment at that shop many years ago –
When I was first getting into doing photographic darkroom work – as a hobby.
Why doesn’t that intersection have a name ?
I’ve been imagining many different possibilities for its name
Elm Street Bottom
Four Street Intersection
Miss McDonald Square
She was the librarian at the nearby library branch for many years
Jay Motors was nearby
My dad bought the nicest car he ever owned at Jay Motors
It was a 1966 navy blue Dodge Coronet Station Wagon.
It was only one year old and had been repossessed.
It was in perfect condition.
I bought clear plastic floor coverings that Christmas for dad’s blue Dodge Coronet car.
And a TV show was current at that time
It was called
“Coronet Blue”
It was about a young man who had amnesia –
The only thing he could remember about his Past was the phrase:
“Coronet Blue”.
Lesley and Dale and I watched that show on summer nights on TV.
It must have been about 1967.
The following video of the show is 49 minutes long. My dad departed this life at 49 years and 4 months. It was 1974 – December 28th. His birthday was August 29th, 1925.
I was in a summer romance that summer – with Eileen
The Summer of ’74.
She sent a card to me that summer
On the cover was a picture of a large seashell on the wet sands of a beach.
I’m not sure if it was a coronet seashell or another kind.
It began in May
It ended in August
Now, I am 74 years old.
And it is August 15th, 2026.
My mom departed this life on this date – 8 years ago today – August 15th, 2018.
She was 88 years old.
She was 21 when I was born
Eileen was 21 during The Summer of ’74.
