An Imaginary Dialogue with April Mellow Day
August Deepening Dawn: “Dear April, may I confide in you ?”
April Mellow Day: “Yes, August. What would you like to tell me this evening ?”
August: “Strange things are happening.”
April: “What are these strange things, August ?”
August: “They have to do with conversations – things people tell me.”
April: “What are people telling you, August ?”
August: “One thing someone told me is that she bought batteries for her flashlight; and there were warnings on the packaging about the batteries overheating.”
April: “What was strange about that ?”
August: “Battery manufacturers are supposed to make reliable and safe batteries – not batteries that they are obligated to warn the customer that their batteries might overheat. Who would buy batteries that instill fear in the owner that they might overheat ? This same person has many times in the past told me things that afterwards left me wondering if she’s either trying to upset me with incredible “stories” or to make me seriously wonder if she is unreal. I’ve been trying to imagine what to reply to her the next time she tells me a “tall tale.”
April: “And have you decided on any possible replies to her ?”
August: “Yes.”
April: “Tell me.”
August: “I could simply say, ‘That doesn’t sound right’ or: ‘That’s sounds incredible.’ Or, ‘That sounds like something a lady on the 15th floor of a ten-story building likes to make up.’ But, I imagine that she might be telling me these incredible things with the intention of provoking me to say something – and then she might tell other people in the building what I said – and then they might take offense at me.’”
April: “What other strange things have people told you, lately ?”
August: “Last week the apartment inspector, G. R., came to my apartment on the day he was supposed to be here for the annual inspection. When he got inside my apartment, he told me that he didn’t have time to do the inspection [it only takes about ten minutes]. Another man accompanied him. He said the other man had to check on something in the other room. And the other man did go into another room for a minute. I told the inspector, G. R., about the peeling paint issues above my stove – which I also told him last year – during the annual inspection — and behind the bathroom door; and around the left window in the bedroom. He said all those things would be documented. And these annual inspections are not followed up with repairs. They only document what they observe needs fixing. It is still necessary for the person living in the apartment to call in to Maintenance for any repairs — or else the problem is left unfixed. I also mentioned a crack in the wall near the apartment door – and wondered if it may have appeared when we had a very unusual earthquake — for this part of the Country – namely, New England] — at least ten years ago – which I felt as I was sitting in a chair in the living room. He told me that my apartment would definitely pass inspection. I said thank you. He told me he would return to do the inspection next Wednesday or Thursday. And they left. About an hour later, I left my apartment. As I was walking down the hallway to the elevator on the 8th floor, I saw him. He was in front of another person’s apartment door. It looked like he was doing apartment inspections. There are 20 apartments on each of 9 floors here. The first floor does not have apartments. I was disturbed in my thoughts for more than a day – because it seemed to me that what he told me about not having time to inspect my apartment was not true.”
April: “It does seem strange that he would come to your apartment on the day he was supposed to inspect your apartment – and tell you that he didn’t have time to inspect it – and then proceed to inspect the other apartments on the 8th floor. It sounds absurd!”
August: “And the very next day another strange thing happened.”
April: “What was this other strange thing ?”
August: “I received an envelope in my USPS mailbox from Woonsocket Housing Authority – the property manager of John F. Kennedy Manor. There was a return envelope with the full name of Woonsocket Housing Authority and the correct address of the main office. There was no explanatory letter in the envelope – and no signature from anyone. The envelope only contained a detailed form to be filled out with information about my bank account – and the request for a routing number and a voided check – just so that in the event that Woonsocket Housing Authority should ever need to send a refund to me – they would be able to do so. Well, I have been paying my rent by auto-deduction from my checking account every single month for about 15 years! And each year, I don’t even have to contact my bank when my rent amount increases. The Woonsocket Housing Authority and my bank take care of it. So, it seems unnecessary for me to have to fill out this form that was just sent to me a few days ago. And Woonsocket Housing Authority does not owe me a refund. And many years ago, they did send an unrequested refund to my bank account for a payment of $75. It had to do with having paid for the use of my air conditioner; however, I had that air-conditioner removed about a week later; and did not buy another one. So, they were able to send a refund to my bank account without my intervention.”
August: “And today, September 28, 2026, I found a notice in my hallway mailbox from the apartment inspector, G. R., – just like the one I received last week by USPS mail, letting me know that I had a new appointment on October 1, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM to have my apartment inspected. After reading it, I began having very upsetting thoughts again about being told last week by the inspector in my apartment – that he didn’t have time to inspect my apartment. I can’t help but anticipate what might happen if he knocks on my door. I imagine he’s going to ask me again, “May I come in ?” I may not be able to answer the question. I may not want to say a word.”
April: “I find this very strange, August.”
August: “And there are some other “strange” things about the building.”
April: “What other strange things ?”
August: “The door to the trash room on the 8th floor has become very hard to open. It requires a very strong effort to pull it open and hold it open while pushing a trash bag through the opening that is about – maybe 20 inches square. Many people living here are elderly or they have disabilities. Why then is the door to the trash chute fixed so that such a strong effort is required to open it ?”
August: “And another problem that recently appeared has to do with the rear entrance door; if you don’t instantly walk through the doorway – after using your photo ID pass card – the door will suddenly close more than halfway – and then close completely. And one of the two elevators – the one on the right — also provides a very minimal amount of time for people to get in or get out of the elevator before it closes.”

August: “Yes. And I also suspect that people who do such things are well-prepared to deny their intentions – and make up excuses — or say, “You’re crazy. You should be on medications.”

August: “Maybe they read my blog and are very offended by what I write about the corruption that is in the world. [And maybe they are prepared to say they never heard of my blog – and never read a word of it. Someone – actually two people I was writing to – often wanted me to send money or gift cards to them. I never met Felicia W. — nor Jane Raine – alias – Janet Robinson – alias – Matildaroy. I stopped sending money and gift cards to them. Now, they don’t write to me – except in reply to my emails to them — to ask me for “50 pounds, pls.” So, I began thinking of Felicia as being like a nickelodeon machine – unless you put a nickel into it, it remains silent – by nickelodeon machine I was thinking of these small music boxes I remember seeing as a young boy on the table in a diner. If you put a nickel into the slot you were then allowed to select a song and the nickelodeon box would play that song for you; but, if you put no nickel in it, then it didn’t play “nothin.”

August: “Early this morning, I woke up remembering a dream I just had.”
April: “What was the dream, August ?”
August: “I dreamed I was in Woonsocket and wanting to go to Providence. I went to a bus stop and waited – hoping that I was waiting at the bus stop for the bus going to the Providence of God. Other people were there waiting too. I asked them if this bus stop was the right one to get to Providence – the Providence of God. They looked like nice people. And then, suddenly, the scene changed. I was at the counter somewhere about to make a purchase. The counter reminded me of the student service counter at C.C.R.I. in Lincoln, Rhode Island. [Community College of Rhode Island]. I remember going there – to college – many years ago. I saw someone there once near that student service counter on Registration Night. She was married. There wasn’t anything between us. I saw her at Charles D. Burns in North Smithfield, RI where we both worked assembling picture frames. At CCRI, she told me she was taking classes to become a nurse. I wasn’t in any classes with her. Later, I heard that she had committed suicide – using her policeman husband’s revolver. I was sorry, of course. She was a lady – a nice person. She wasn’t the type to ever hold a revolver in her hand – much less shoot herself with it. I hope she’s in heaven now. She had a baby. She may have been depressed after giving birth. Getting back to the scene in my dream of being at a counter at CCRI – I was asking a question and the lady at the counter was slipping her fingers into my wallet on the counter. I was feeling anxious about that. She may have been only putting my dollar bills in change back into my wallet for me. I’m trying to remember the rest of the dream. I woke up thinking about things in my own life, lately – the apartment inspector who is supposed to be at my apartment in 3 days to inspect my apartment on October 1st. And then I was remembering you, April. You were asking me what the initials M.D.U.C.I. mean.”
April: “What do they mean, August ?”
August: “They stand for Mark David Under Christ’s Control.”
April: “Shouldn’t those initials be: MDUCC ?”
August: “Yes, April. I guess I don’t spell well in my dreams.”
April: “What does Christ’s Control mean, August ?”
August: “It has to do with no longer being under self-control – but under the Lord Jesus Christ’s control. [Don’t worry. I don’t own a gun; and I don’t want one. I don’t need one]. I’m thankful to be forever under Christ’s Control — and belonging to Him and his Heavenly Father and with the help of the Helper – His Holy Spirit having Sovereignty over all of me – my spirit, soul, and body – my thoughts, words and deeds.”
