Walking in His Life
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” -John 1: 1-5 ESV Study Bible.

Dead Man Walking
Took a nap mid-morning
It lasted about 45 minutes
I was thankful to God for the sleep
Woke up slowly
Taking my time waking up
Got out of bed slowly
Began walking out of the bedroom slowly
Unsteadily
This is all very usual for me now.
It’s the way I am now
Feeling like “dead man walking”
After a few minutes I began feeling more alive —
After a little coffee and tea and toast with a slice of cheese.
Put on my shoes and thought of taking a walk
Didn’t know where I would walk
Looked at a street map of Woonsocket
Put on sweater and jacket and hat
Left apartment
Went down the elevator
Outside, turned right
Went down Clinton to Cumberland
Crossed the street
Reached Elm Street
Eventually reached Cass Park
Went in there
Walked through Cass Park
All the way to Aylsworth Avenue
On Mendon Road walked to Chipman’s Corner
Crossed Cass Avenue and continued on Mendon Road
Saw the property where The Mailloux’s had a house
The House is gone now
A condominium is there now.
On the sidewalk in front of the condominium, I stopped
And touched the only thing left of the former Mailloux’s Homestead –
Two small stone pillars that stood left and right of where there had been a walkway to their house.
The walkway is gone now
Only those pillars remain
And the huge beech tree that was to the left of the walkway is also gone.
With my left hand I touched the short pillar on the right
I said quietly – but audibly
Andree
Then I touched it again with my right hand and said again
Andree.
It was not a cry for help
The LORD is my Helper
Then I continued walking
The long walk took 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Andree shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with me by letters
Beginning in February 1978
We were both 26 years old
Now it is 2026
We are 74 now
We are not corresponding for a few years now.
Walked on Papineau Avenue
Where lived for 13 years
My first apartment
From July 19, 1971 – and 19 years old – to Springtime 1984 – 32 years old
And without a job.
Noticed on my walk that the name Papineau has 8 letters
And the name of the condominium
Monte Castello Villa — middle name – has 8 letters
Later, on this long walk —
Walked on Merida Avenue
Saw the house where John S. and family lived when we were at St. Charles School in the late 50s to 1966.
Stopped and spoke with a lady living at Sadwin Apartments
She was sitting outside
Waiting for someone
Where I lived for 15 years –
Where my parents were married
On June 19th, 1948
In the chapel
On the second floor –
I lived on the 3rd floor – apt 305.
Also walked down Sweet Avenue [earlier in this walk]
Where I lived my first 18 years.
1951-1970
August: “April ?”
April: “Yes, August ?”
August: “I need a song to listen to; don’t know which one would comfort me.”
April: “I don’t know what song you might like hearing, either.”
August: “Maybe we can just wait peacefully for a while. Silence is also a good thing – a restful thing.”
April: “Alright, August.”
August: “April May has 8 letters.”
April: “True.”
August: “Treasure has 8 letters.”
April: “November has 8 letters.”
August: “Twelve more days in October.”
April: “There is a title to a movie – the word October is in it. Can’t recall the name. Sean Connery is in it.”
August: “I found the movie title, April. It’s called: “The Hunt for Red October.”
April: “What is the movie about ?”
Hunt for Red October – Jonesy Reports
April: “August, I was expecting you to walk over here, yesterday. What happened ?”
August: “The Spirit reminded me of some Scriptures about the flesh.”
April: “What are you referring to ?”
August: “Jesus said: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” -John 6: 63 ESV Study Bible.
April: “Did anything else happen on your walk, August ?”
August: “Yes.”
April: “What ?”
August: “I stopped on Elm Street – across the street from Merida Avenue – and just looked up that street.”
April: “Why ?”
August: “My friend and classmate from our days at St. Charles School lived halfway up that street in the 1960s.”
April: “What else ?”
August: “A pretty young lady came walking by. I said Hi. She said Hi.”
April: “Then what ?”
August: “About a minute later, I resumed my walk.”
April: “Was the young blonde lady still in sight ?”
August: “Yes, but very far ahead of me.”
April: “Then what ?”
August: “She turned onto Sweet Avenue. That was interesting. I wondered if she lived on Sweet Avenue; but she walked all the way to the end and turned onto Cass Avenue. When I finally reached Cass Avenue, she was no longer there.”
April: “So, then what did you do ?”
August: “I walked all the way to Cass Park. And all the way across Cass Park to Aylsworth Avenue.”
April: “Why ?”
August: “I wanted to see where Lamoureux Baseball Field used to be. I played baseball on that field with friends who had gone on to Mount Saint Charles Academy. I went to Woonsocket High School – after we graduated from 8th grade in June of 1966.”
April: “And what did you see there ?”
August: “For decades I had thought that Lamoureux Field was no longer there; because the Woonsocket Area Vocational Technical Center (high school) had been built there. Well, I was very surprised to see that baseball field is STILL there – although the fence around it is no longer a green wooden fence. And there was no sign of the name Lamoureux. I walked onto that baseball field today; and even stood at the plate – and looked out at the pitcher’s mound. It was as if I had walked into the Past and had re-entered the summer of 1967; but my old friends and classmates of 8 years growing up together at St. Charles School – Thomas Whalen, Michael Leja, John Scibak, – and some of their new classmates from Mount – Mark Cote, Ronald Remillard, Manigan, Ouelette – were not there. I was all alone there– with only my memories of those summer days gone by — and years and even decades gone by – when we were about 14 years old.”
April: “I don’t know what to say.”
August: “I’d like to listen to a song now. I don’t know which one.”
April: “I don’t know, either.”
August: “I’m thinking of a movie.”
April: “Which movie, August ?”
August: “Field of Dreams.”

April: “How do you understand that, August ?”
August: “The less I am, the more Christ can live on the throne of the heart.”
April: “What does that mean ?”
August: “As our self diminishes in significance to us, Christ becomes more significant to us – as we give up our place – on the throne of the heart — to him.”

August: “April, are we soulmates who haven’t met each other yet ?”
April: “I don’t know. And I haven’t read any mention of soulmates in the holy Scriptures, either. Maybe Christ is the only One for those who believe the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
August: “Maybe in the regeneration of all things it will be entirely different than it is now,”
“But, as it is written,
What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
Nor the heart of man imagined,
What God has prepared for those who love him” –
