“And the Truth Will Set You Free”
“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” -John 8: 31-32. NIV Study Bible.

August: “Hi April.”
April: “Hi August.”
August: “Something’s on my mind.”
April: “What is it ?”
August: “It’s about the question people often ask each other ?”
April: “What question is that ?”
August: “The question: ‘How are you ?’”
April: “What are your thoughts about that question, August ?”
August: “Lately, when people ask me that question, I don’t reply.”
April: “Why do you not reply ?”
August: “Here is an example why I don’t reply: Carol asked me that question and I replied, ‘I’m tired.’” She replied with both her hands and her speech. She threw her hands out and up and exclaimed, “Just pray to the Lord!” I replied, ‘I pray to the Lord all the time – all day I’m praying to the Lord.’ Afterwards, I had many thoughts about her reply – and reaction. I thought a lot about how to reply to that question from now on.”
April: “And what did you resolve to reply next time someone asks, ‘How are you ?”
August: “I cannot decide such a thing. It may seem simple to some; but, I guess I’m not that simple. Maybe I’m a mystery that hasn’t been solved yet; so, maybe the best way for me to let go of thinking about the very many possible answers to that question is to decide I will not say a word – that way I won’t need to wonder what to say. And another thing is this: my memory is getting useless – so, even if I came up with an excellent answer to the question: ‘How are you ?’ I very likely wouldn’t be able to remember that answer to the question.”
April: “How are you, August ?”
August: “I’m literary .”
April: “That’s a truthful answer, August. You are literary.”
August: “And the word literary just so happens to have 8 letters. That’s my number.”
April: “In what way – or ways – are you literary, August ?”
August: “I like to write.”
April: “Are there other ways that you are literary, August ?”
August: “I like to read – but not nearly as much reading as formerly – I’m tired – as I said. And I like to remember things – even though my memory for some things is becoming useless – I still remember [so far] many things from long ago. I remember people — and St. Charles School; and Eileen the First. I stopped on Cass Avenue yesterday and looked at the old Quonset Hut where she and her brother lived when we were in first grade. And I walked on Sweet Avenue where I lived in the 8th house on that street.”

August: “How are you, April ?”
April: “I’m always here for you, August.”
August: “That’s true, April. Whenever I need to speak with you, you are always there for me. I love you, April.”
April: “I’m in your heart, August.”
August: “That sounds like a beautiful name for a love song: “April in my Heart.” It makes me feel like crying.”

August: “There’s another idea in my thoughts, April. May I tell you ?”
April: “Yes.”
August: “It has to do with seeds.”
April: “What about seeds, August ?”
August: “It’s this idea that we are all seeds. And we are all planted in the ground. And we are all waiting down there in the darkness – waiting and hoping to sprout – and grow up – and out of our darkness-under-ground – so we can break out of the earth’s surface – and see the Light of Day – and the blue sky – and feel the warm Springtime air – even the early Spring air of April-in-our-hearts — and all the many things that are living above US. Maybe all the stress and suffering in our lives is all part of the experience of being born again – just as childbirth is very stressful and painful for both mother–and-child—and growing up has many moments of crying—and waiting—and not knowing. Faith in God is necessary for US to keep going through the hard times—to reach the Goodness of God—and God is Love. And without believing in God we may easily fall into the false belief that we must be tough and hard and unyielding – but if we do that – then we won’t ever break open – like the Seed does when it sprouts; however, we must have the Helper – the Lord’s Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Understanding – so that we do not yield to those who would lead US astray—into wrongdoing. We need discernment to choose the good – and resist the evil.”
“How can a man be born when he is old? Nicodemus asked. Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” -John 3: 4-8 NIV Study Bible.
