“The Fire Drill”

The Fire Drill

August 3, 2019. Saturday Evening. 9:23 PM.

I live in a very large apartment building.

Every two or three months a fire drill is conducted throughout the building over an address system in each apartment.

The program is extremely distressing to hear.

It goes on for about an hour, sometimes longer.

The following is an attempt to describe the experience from the point of view of a resident.

I suppose that some residents are more susceptible than others to being bothered by the noise.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Fire Dill

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

[Each single Ding! Represents a really loud, shrill, high-pitched, piercing repeated noise]

The noise doesn’t exactly sound like “Ding!”

I can’t spell the sound.

It is as unspellable as it is unbearable to me.

Many of the following statements are imaginary. They are not all heard over the address system.

This is not a news journal article.

It is not purely factual.

We know the fire drill is obnoxious.

We’re Just Doing Our Job!

Just like the workers in a European country we’re just doing their jobs.

They didn’t want to cause suffering for all those millions of their neighbors who were getting gassed to death in those concentration camps.

Of course not.

If you can’t stand the constant repetition of the

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! . . .

If you can’t stand the repetition of

“Please stay in your apartment with the door closed until the fire department gives specific instructions for you to leave.” Then, all you have to do is leave your apartment.

OK, we understand:

Many of you are elderly or disabled and it would be a real hardship for you to leave your apartment in the heat of July or in the cold of January for an hour in the heat or cold outside.

You don’t have to stay outside.

You can go somewhere.

We understand your difficulty.

We understand the mental torment of listening to the very high pitched

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Before and after every repetition of:

“Please Stay in Your Apartment with the Door Closed Until the Fire Department Gives Specific Instructions for You to Leave.” That goes on and on and on for about an hour.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We understand it’s Maddening

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We understand it’s Cruel.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We understand that it is so obnoxious that you can’t even pay attention to it; and don’t want to remember it; and consequently you’re not learning anything helpful from it.

We understand that, for a few people, it inspires angry thoughts.

Just Remember How Cruel It Is for those refugees in detention centers.

They Are Suffering Much More Than You Are.

So, try to remember that and be thankful.

It could be a lot worse.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

So, just put ear plugs in your ears.

And, if that doesn’t help much . . .

If you still can hear VERY LOUDLY

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Then, just go to your room and get on your knees and pray for God’s mercy

That You Don’t Go Mad

Pray That You Don’t Go Insane

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

“Stay in your apartment with the door closed until the fire department gives specific instructions for you to leave.”

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

And remember:

We Are not Trying To Torment You

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We Are Not Trying To Torment You

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Why Would We Want To Torment You?

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

All of these Ding Ding Ding Dings are an essential part of the message.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We Would not insert all of these Ding! Ding! Ding! Dings!

If they were not necessary.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

It’s really essential and important for you all to hear each and every

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Before and after every single statement during the Fire Drill.

Don’t you remember when you were in school, how it was that every single time your teacher spoke a sentence to the class, she always said

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

And after each statement the teacher always added

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Oh, you don’t remember that?

Well, maybe you had a kind and merciful teacher who did not do that to you.

Man’s Inhumanity to man . . .

“Eve of Destruction”

By Barry McGuire

“And tell me over and over and over again, my friends,

You Don’t Believe We’re On the Road to Destruction”

We’re just doing our jobs . . . just like those workers in Europe during World War Two . . .  gassing millions of their neighbors to death in unbearably squalid conditions.

And like ICE is doing to the refugees fleeing horrible conditions in their poor countries and suffering in southern Texas detention centers; and children being separated from their parents in cruel conditions.

And our national debt is more than 22 trillion dollars.

And that debt is going to expand greatly

And the very rich are going to be getting even wealthier

While the Nation continues to go deeper and deeper into extreme debt.

And we are told that the economy is doing very well

And the people are suffering more and more

The people in Hong Kong are protesting at the risk of their lives for a reason.

Their apartments are extremely small.

Their working hours are very long.

And they must work six days a week.

We Are Just Doing Our Jobs

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

And Don’t Forget to Vote

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

And if anything is bothering you . . .

Say something.

Let Us Know

We are here to help.

And, if you don’t like it . . .  “go back where you came from” the ruler says.

Because the rich and powerful are working very hard to keep the wicked world system just the way it is.

The world system is working just the way they want it to work.

They love their money and their power and they intend to keep it all just as it is;

With them in power and them in the money.

Don’t Keep it to yourself

Let Us Know How We’re Doing

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

And if you can’t take it

See a psychiatrist:

They will prescrible (sic) drugs to dumb you down and dope you up and stupify you;

So you will be able to take it – so you will be able to suffer it.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

And if you don’t want to be drugged by psychiatric drugs,

And you can’t go out in the heat of July

And the cold of January;

And if sitting for over an hour in the Community Room with a sore back

Doesn’t work for you;

And if aspirin for your abdominal pain gives you blood in your urine, well,

Just remember to stay calm or it will only get worse.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Now, wasn’t that fire drill helpful?

Don’t You Feel Safer, now?

Now you know what to do in a fire.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

You have freedom of speech in this country;

So, don’t be afraid to peacefully and gently and kindly and with humility write about how you feel.

Don’t keep it all bottled up inside.

Let your concerns be known.

“As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them apart. He picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the cloak that had fallen from him and struck the water with it. “Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.” -2 Kings 2:11-14 NIV Study Bible.

“When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.

“I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to the earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

“Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” -Revelation 6:9-17 NIV Study Bible.
