“Phoebe”

 Phoebe

There is a lady named Phoebe

Who works at a neighborhood store

We only have met at the cash register

She likely doesn’t even know my name

I looked for her name in my booklet of

Names for Boys and Girls

To learn what Phoebe means

The name isn’t there

In my Open Bible, though,

There is an index of Bible names and words

So, I turned to that Book

In search of Phoebe’s name

And found her there

Her name means “pure, bright”

And there is also a reference to the place in God’s Word

Where Phoebe is mentioned

So, I went to that place and read about Phoebe

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea.

I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints

And to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people,

Including me.” -Romans 16:1, 2. NIV Study Bible.

Cenchrea is a harbor of Corinth, Greece.

I remember a lovely song named “Bright Eyes”

And, since Phoebe means ‘pure, bright’ would like to dedicate it to Phoebe.

Bright Eyes – Art Garfunkel

This post in my blog — named “Phoebe” — is the 88th post since the beginning of marksimaginings began in August of 2018. My mom, whose first name is Beulah, departed this life that month and year. She was 88 years old. August is the 8th month of the year. I started school in 1958 and our class at St. Charles School graduated in the 8th grade. I’m now 68. I live on the 8th floor. Moved here in 2008. There is a card game called Crazy Eights. This isn’t crazy, to me. It’s just wonderful. My family lived at 80 Sweet Avenue — although, for my first 9 years we had lived in the three story house in the front of Memere’s property at 76 Sweet Avenue and on the 3rd floor. The house that we moved into in the back yard was the 8th house on the street if you count the house on the corner of Sweet and Cass Avenue. And, if you count from the other end of Sweet Avenue, including the house at the corner of Elm and Sweet Avenue, where my childhood friend Charley lived — it’s still the 8th house! And my dad was born in August, on the 29th — which is the same day that Ingrid Bergman was born — and she departed this life on her birthday. I like to think her life was like a home run — she began it and ended it at home plate. Her life made a complete circuit — just like a home run!

The Natural (1984) – Final Home Run scene

Some things in life are natural and wonderful — and some things in life are supernatural and even more wonderful! Glory be to God for both the naturally wonderful things and also for the supernaturally wonderful things. He is the Author of Life.

The Natural – The Final Homerun

This version shows the lyrics — which are always important to me because the lyrics help me understand the meaning of the song.

Noticed in the first video, above, of “The Natural” the year 1984. Well, in my senior year of high school, I had to give an oral report of the novel, 1984 by George Orwell, for Mr. Guertin’s English class. The report was assigned to four students. On the day of the report, the other three students were absent from class; so, I had to give the report all by myself. After reading the novel, I went to Pratt’s Drug Store on Elm Street and bought the Cliff Notes for 1984 and read it. That gave me much better understanding of the story for my report. I was also seeing a psychiatrist when in high school. Dr. Jones had prescribed a tranquilizer. I was supposed to take it three times a day; however, I usually only took it once or twice a day. I didn’t want to become addicted to it. I took a second one before lunch that day to help me stay calm for that report before the class. I got through the report OK.

Thinking again of the name Phoebe

The last syllable of her name is be.

This reminded me of a tremendously beautiful and heart-touching and soul-stirring and spirit-inspiring song by Neil Diamond — and video:

Jonathan Livingston Seagull – Be

I wonder how Jonathan Livingston Seagull feels when he’s flying

Does he feel all by himself?

Or does he feel one with His Maker

And in His Maker’s Life?

I understand that the following Scripture will seem out of the blue to many. They will wonder:

What does this have to do with what has just been written?

Well, it is spiritual.

And God calls us in Christ to be spiritual.

He told Nicodmus:

“In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’” -John 3:3. NIV.

And:

“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.’” -John 3:5-8. NIV Study Bible.

Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man (Lyrics & Traducción; English – Español)

Sunday, March 8, 2020. 7:46 PM. I went outside for a walk this evening. My walk began at 6:35 PM. I had forgotten to change the time on my clocks and my watch today – even though I knew that daylight saving time began today. So, I thought my walk was beginning at 5:35 PM – which was not true. I met my neighbor, Helen, outside. She was walking her dog, Mitzy. We stopped to chat for two minutes. She said her dog was named after Mitzy Gaynor, who was in the movie, “South Pacific.”

Something else that was very special on my walk this evening. At about 14 minutes into the walk I was on Social Street approximately across the street from Earle Street and near the Post Office. Two young women were approaching. I recognized one of them. She was Phoebe. This was the first time I ever saw Phoebe outside the neighborhood store where she works. I waved my left hand and said “Hi” as we passed each other.  She looked at me and said, “Hi.” We continued to walk in opposite directions. When I reached Cumberland Street at Social Corner I turned right and saw the nearly full moon rising over the Plaza Center Building. The moon will be full tomorrow, March 9th, 2020, at 1:47 PM. I recalled that my mother told me she saw the moon as she was getting into a car to go to Woonsocket Hospital on the night of November 13,th 1951, the night before I was born. The moon was full on November 13,th 1951.
