Eileen & Mark’s Anniversary Is Tomorrow

The Anniversary of a Phone Call on Wednesday, May 27th, 2020

So, Mark was thinking of Eileen, today – Wednesday, May 26th, 2021

And in the evening was wondering what he might write to Eileen – or say to her.

Mark: “Hi Eileen. I was just thinking of you today. It will be one year ago tomorrow that we spoke on the phone for about a half-hour.”

Eileen: “And what were you thinking of me, mark?”

Mark: “I was wondering what I might say to you if I called you.”

Eileen: “Well, what would you like to say to me, Mark?”

Mark: “Oh . .  . I don’t really know what to say, Eileen; maybe something that would interest you so the conversation would keep going for a while.”

Eileen: “And why would you like to keep the conversation with me going for a while, Mark?”

Mark: “I just imagine it would be such a sweet thing to be in a friendly relaxed conversation with you – as  if it were “the summer of ‘74” again and we were 21 and 22 years old and just having an innocent conversation.”

Eileen: “Did we ever have an innocent conversation, Mark?”

Mark: “I don’t know if we did. Maybe, Eileen, we could try to have an innocent conversation – even if it’s the first one we ever had! Would you like to try it, Eileen?”

Eileen: “OK, Mark. Let’s try it. What makes a conversation innocent, anyway – so we understand what we’re aiming at?”

Mark: “Harmless in effect or intention” – according to part of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary -Eleventh Edition.”

Eileen: “OK Mark. Let’s try to have a conversation that is harmless in effect and intention.”

Mark: “Thank you, Eileen, for inviting me to your family’s house on Glen Road and introducing me to the board game of chess. That was for me a very special hour in my whole life – that you gave me that time with you and you alone in the basement of your home.”

Eileen: “And why was that hour with me so special to you, Mark?”

Mark: “Beecause of who I was with.”

Eileen: “Who were you with, Mark?”

Mark: “I was with Eileen.”

Eileen: “And what is so special to you about Eileen, Mark?”

Mark: “She is.”

Eileen: “She is what, Mark?”

Mark: “She is so special to me, Eileen.”

Eileen: “Why, Mark?”

Mark: “That’s just the way she is, Eileen.”

Eileen: “What makes you think so?”

Mark: “The way I feel in her presence is what makes me think she is so special.”

Eileen: “And how do you feel in her presence, Mark?”

Mark: “I feel very special in her presence, Eileen.”

Eileen: “And what is this special feeling you feel in her presence, Mark?”

Mark: “It is mysterious and glorious, Eileen.”

Eileen: “You feel a feeling that is mysterious and glorious in the presence of Eileen?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen.”

Eileen: “What is it that evokes this mysterious and glorious feeling in the presence of Eileen, Mark?”

Mark: “Maybe it is love, Eileen.”

Eileen: “You feel love for Eileen, do you?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen, I do.”

Eileen: “Mark, do you remember how to play chess?”

Mark: “I forgot.”

Eileen: “Would you like me to show you how to play again, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen.”

Eileen: “Do you imagine, Mark, that somehow it will be different for us to play chess again for the first time since May of 1974?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen.”

Eileen: “How will it be different this time, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, I will be more aware that I’m in your presence, this time.”

Eileen: “And what difference will that awareness make, Mark?”

Mark: “It’s like the difference between being in a basement in the dark; and then turning on the light and seeing for the first time what is in that quiet room.”

Eileen: “And what is in that room, Mark?”

Mark: “Eileen.”

Eileen: “Does Eileen turn on a light in your room, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen, she does.”

Eileen: “And do you like what you see in your “room” when you are with Eileen, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen.”

Eileen: “And what happens to you in your room when you see Eileen there, Mark?”

Mark: “Love happens, Eileen.”

Eileen: “And how does love happen, Mark, in the presence of Eileen?”

Mark: “It happens mysteriously and gloriously, Eileen.”

Eileen: “How exactly do you imagine this mysterious and glorious feeling will occur, Mark?”

Mark: “I imagine, Eileen, that if we were to meet alone in a quiet place; and we were standing close and our eyes met in silence and we just held that gaze for a few moments that my heart would open; and in that heart-felt poignant moment with you the gates of my heart would open and that would make me cry.”

Eileen: “Is that what you want to do with me, Mark? You want us to gaze into each others eyes, silently, and open our hearts to each other and cry in love?”

Mark: “It might be very comforting if we also hugged, Eileen.”

Eileen: “Why, Mark?”

Mark: “It might be very healing to our hearts in that moment of opening to each other in love to hold each other.”

Eileen: “Why, Mark?”

Mark: “We never hugged, Eileen. During the “summer of ‘74” we never just silently held each other and felt the healing power of love blessing our hearts together forever.”

Mark: “Maybe, Eileen, in 1974, the light shining from you to me had not yet penetrated the darkness that I was in. I saw your beautiful light and it looked and felt glorious to me; but, it had not yet pierced my heart and soul. It had not broken into me, yet. I was still an acorn-in-waiting. I had just fallen off the tree; didn’t have enough living water and sunshine from you, yet, to break open and begin to sprout.”

Eileen: “Are you sure about all this, Mark?”

Mark: “Can an acorn be sure about anything, Eileen?”

Eileen: “I’m sure I don’t know about that, Mark.”

Mark: “Maybe it takes two unsure acorns to break open to each other and grow up together; branching out to each other; living in the sunshine and in the rain and in the darkness together; being green together and leafless together . . . and maybe someday God will make them evergreen together.”

Mark: “It will make it a richer experience, Eileen.”

Eileen: “And what does that mean, Mark?”

Mark: “

Thursday, May 27, 2021. 6:01 AM.

Mark: “Happy Anniversary, Dear.”

Carolyn: “Happy anniversary, maybe.”

Eileen: “Mark! Have you lost your minf?!”

Mark: “Maybe . . . in the presence of God there is no longer mind.”

Eileen: “Well, what is there . . . in the Presence of God?”

Mark: “Maybe, there is only Love and Light and Spirit in the Shekinah Glory of God’s Presence.”

Eileen: “Is that really possible, maybe?”

Mark: “But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’ Then Peter said in reply, ‘See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.’” -Matthew 19:26-30 ESV Study Bible.

Eileen’s middle name is Ann. And in the musical “Annie” there is a song called “Tomorrow.” And in this blog post “Eileen and Mark’s Anniversary Is Tomorrow,” which began being written yesterday, that annie_versary was tomorrow; and Today is that anniversary [May 27th]; so, if anyone should ask: “Is it ever “Tomorrow?” The answer is Yes. In fact, Today is that Tomorrow. Yesterday’s Tomorrow Is Today. The Past and the Future have finally arrived Today. Maybe this is Eternity. I don’t know.”

And across the street from where Eileen and Carolyn lived on Glen Road in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, there is another street called Oakley Road. Remember Annie Oakley? And remember that acorns when they sprout begin a new life that may become an Oak – if they be blessed by God to become all that He intends for them?

Sometime Later

Mark happened to be at the supermarket – they finally got a Market Basket supermarket in Woonsocket, RI. And although Eileen lived in a neighboring town, she came to her old hometown this day, Today, to see this new supermarket. And Mark just happened to turn around at that moment – and he and Eileen actually bumped into each other at the new Market Basket. At first, they didn’t recognize each other and were just apologizing for the accidental collision; then Mark saw Eileen’s face and Eileen was already recognizing Mark. They hadn’t seen each other in more years than they could remember.

Mark: “Eileen? . . . Eileen! You know what, Eileen?”

Eileen: “What, Mark?”

Mark: “We never hugged, Eileen.”

Eileen: “You want to hug me, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen.”

Eileen: “Why, Mark?”

Mark: “Something may happen . . . something lovely, Eileen.”

Eileen: “What lovely thing may happen if we hug, Mark?”

Mark: “Let’s just find out what it may be, Eileen. OK?”

Eileen: So, Eileen took a deep breath . . . and opened her arms to Mark. And Mark took a step closer to Eileen and put his arms around her and they hugged for the first time ever. And they held that a hug for a long while . . . just feeling the blessedness of being together again in sweet love for the first time since “the summer of ’74.”

Eileen: “Mark, do you remember the last time we kissed?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen. It was in Montreal, Canada in August of ’74. And a song was playing on my radio: “You’ve Got To Have Something, If You Want to Be With Me.” And when the song ended, Eileen, you repeated those words.”

Eileen: “Do you have something, Mark?”

Mark: “Yes, Eileen. I have something.”

Eileen: “What is it?”

Mark: “I have love for you, Eileen.”

Eileen: “Why didn’t you tell me that in Montreal in 1974, Mark?”

Mark: “Your name, Eileen, means light – and I love your light, Eileen. Your light is so beautiful to me; however, in 1974, at only 22 years of age, I could not comprehend your light, Eileen. I was not spiritually awake enough to understand you, the light of my life. Even now, I can only see as through a glass darkly.”

Eileen: “Where are these words coming from, Mark? They sound vaguely familiar to me.”

Mark: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” -John 1:1-5. NIV Study Bible.

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” -1 Corinthians 13:12, 13. KJV.
