Day One
June 18th, 2021
There once was a very beautiful lady who was employed at a bank in America. Her life was so blessed in every way she almost never thought of God. Her health was excellent. Her mood was always happy. She had utmost self-confidence. She felt she was never in need. Every week on Friday, she had to enter the bank vault. And every week the bank owner warned all his employees to be very sure not to be in the vault beyond 4:00 PM because it closed at 4:15 PM — automatically; and would not under any circumstances reopen until 9:00 AM of the first working day next week. April, the very beautiful and self-confident employee, took much delight in entering the vault just a few minutes before 4:00 PM each Friday; and getting her work done in there; and departing the vault just before the door’s automatic closing at 4:15 PM. She also enjoyed laughing a little each time she exited the vault just barely before it shut behind her. She was happily proud of her self-confidence and the fact that everything always worked out so well for her. She was delighted with her Self. She loved her Self.
Well, one Friday, things turned out differently for April the bank in America employee. She entered the vault just a few minutes before 4:15 PM. And there on the floor of the vault in the center of the room was a tract. It was a black pamphlet with a beautiful red rose against the black background; and above the rose in white letters were the words “The Rose.” April’s attention mysteriously became so focused on that tract that she forgot everything else and picked it up. There was a chair nearby and April sat down and began to read the brief, poetic words inside. And then, just as she finished reading it and was getting lost in her thoughts about the meaning of it, she heard a soft “click” and turned in her chair and saw that the vault door was closed. And immediately she understood her serious predicament. She would be spending the next three full days and nights there – until Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM. It was the weekend of the first new National holiday – Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. She sat there contemplating her fate. She remembered a man in the story “A Tale of Two Cities” who was imprisoned for 18 years and who called it being “buried alive for 18 years” – and a chapter titled “Recalled to Life.” And she took note that this Friday was June 18th. Then, for one of the very few times in her beautiful life, she recalled that Jesus was buried for three days and three nights in the heart of the earth – and then Rose from the dead. And then she realized for the first time in her life of 27 years that she was in need of real help to get through the next three days and nights imprisoned in the vault. April loved music and she often listened to love songs. And she also had an excellent memory of the music videos she saw and listened to at home. She began remembering the song, “All By Myself.”

In her mind, she recalled the whole song. Then she recalled the bank owner also assuring his employees that, in the event of anyone being locked in the vault, he had provided cases of spring water and tins of sardines and boxes of crackers to sustain anyone who had the great misfortune of being locked in there. April got up and began looking for that food and water. As she was looking, she found a Bible, an ESV Study Bible, that was brand new and still wrapped in plastic. It was on a shelf. Then she opened a closet door and there she saw the cases of spring water and other cases of sardines and several boxes of crackers. She was thankful that, at least, she would not become dehydrated nor starve for the next three days and three nights alone and isolated. And she was also thankful that she had a book to read – something to focus her mind on during the long, quiet hours she would be there, alone – or, so she thought.
She opened the case of spring water bottles and twisted off the cap on one of the plastic bottles and sat down again. Then she got up and got that Bible. As she picked it up she found several more gospel tracts on the shelf under the Bible. She took those, too. She sat down again and removed the plastic wrap and began to examine the Holy Scriptures for the first time in her life. She noticed that inside the plastic wrapping there were some other tracts: one was titled: “Jesus: Who Is He?”

After April had examined the Study Bible and then read the gospel tract about Jesus, she felt very sleepy. She looked around the vault as she sat there; wondering where the most comfortable place might be to lay down. The floor was pure steel. For the first time in April’s life, she wished she was very plump – it would make laying down on that cold hard steel floor more comfortable, she imagined. She hoped that being so very sleepy would enable her to fall asleep anyway – even on a hard cold floor; so, she got up and walked over to that shelf where she had found the Bible earlier; and she just lay down on the floor and closed her eyes. She vaguely recalled something about counting sheep while trying to fall asleep; but instead, she began repeating in her mind “Jesus . . . Jesus . . . Jesus . . . sheep are lambs . . . Jesus is the Lamb of God . . . Jesus is the Lamb of God. I’m counting on Jesus . . .” And she soon fell mercifully asleep. And as she slept in a state of semi consciousness and dream state, she had intimations of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, the mother to be of Jesus. And the angel’s words about the Holy Spirit overshadowing her; and the baby Jesus being conceived in her. And she reasoned: “Well, the baby Jesus has already been conceived in Mary’s womb; there’s no need for that to happen to me; but, being born again by the Holy Spirit of Jesus being born into my heart . . . that’s reasonable and Scriptural. And then, April fell more deeply into sleep.

When she awakened, she immediately wondered how long she had slept. She had no watch nor phone with her. Judging by how she felt she imagined she had slept a few hours – as she often did after walking home from work. So, she guessed it might be about 6:00 PM on Friday. She wanted to try to keep track of the time and day so she could find some encouragement in believing she was making progress toward reaching Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM when the vault door would unlock and she could at last walk out of her imprisonment. She also wondered how she would handle meeting her workmates after three days and three nights in there with no showering nor shampooing nor change of clothing nor brushing her teeth and gargling with mouthwash. She imagined it would be mortifying; and that she might never be so carefree and happy and delightedly self-confident again – for the rest of her life. She imagined this ordeal might be a change of life experience for her; and that she would emerge with a different perspective – a different mindset. A song came into April’s thoughts and touched her heart sweetly and lovingly.

She was walking slowly around the room as she was contemplating these thoughts, hoping to find anything that might be helpful to her. In the closet where she had found the sardines and water and crackers, she noticed something she’d never seen before in the bank vault: a doorknob! She put her hand on it and turned it. A door opened. Inside was another small room with a toilet and sink. She turned on the faucet. Water poured out into the sink. “O thank you, God. Thank you, my Lord , my Savior God,” April was saying silently in her heart-felt thoughts. “I can at least wash my hands after eating those oily sardines and crackers with my fingers.” And then she saw several rolls of paper towels, too; and several rolls of bathroom tissue. “Thank you, again, dear Lord God for Your kindness to me.” Her heart felt touched — as if she was listening to a deeply beautiful love song.

April understood that the Helper, Whom Jesus had spoken about to his disciples, was helping her; and comforting her with these words of Holy Scripture coming into her heart.

April remembered her grandmother, Dora Depot, telling her how to make “a bum’s lunch” – a sardine on a saltine cracker with a dab of ketchup on top — repeated several times – “until the sardine tin is empty and your belly is full.” April also recalled her grandmother telling her about her grandfather. He was an alcoholic. Her grandmother told her that he would often take his paycheck on Friday and go off on “a drunk” – a weekend jaunt traveling freely and inconspicuously in railroad cars. April wondered if he packed “a bum’s lunch” to take with him on these journeys. Maybe that was how her grandmother got “the recipe” for “a bum’s lunch,” April imagined.

Mercifully, the Lord let April sleep much of the time during the next three and one-half days and four nights. And He blessed her with His peace and good courage.
On Tuesday Morning, April checked the vault door. It opened. She took a deep breath and called upon the name of the Lord her God: “Lord Jesus. Help me, Lord.” She stepped out of the vault holding her Bible in both hands pressed against her bosom. To her surprise no one was there in the bank. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She walked out of the bank and began walking home – a mile away. She saw people lying on the streets and sidewalks, motionless. She stopped at the sight of one on the sidewalk. She knelt down and felt the hand of a boy. It was cold. She shook him gently. He was dead. She walked by a coffee shop. There was a movement inside. She went in. There was a man sitting at a customer table drinking a coffee. She said, Hi. He said Hi. “What happened to everyone?” she asked. “They’re all dead,” he answered. April felt fear and turned around and walked out. As she continued to walk toward home, she saw more dead bodies. She thought, “What if that man in the coffee shop is the only man left alive on earth?” She turned around and walked back to the coffee shop. She was relieved to see the man still sitting there alone drinking his coffee. She took courage in her heart and walked up to him.
April: “Do you know what happened to everyone? Why are they all dead? Why are we still alive?”
Man: “It’s a mystery to me, too. I woke up this morning as usual and came here for coffee – also as usual — and saw dead bodies everywhere on the sidewalks and streets. How is it that you’re still alive, lady?”
April: “I was accidently locked into the vault of the bank where I work – for three and one-half days and four nights. Maybe, being isolated in there is what saved me from whatever killed everyone else – except you.”
Man: “My name is Will. Will Watson. You may call me Watson, if you’re willing. If you’re not willing then you may call me Will.” He laughed lightly at the humor in his statement. May I make a cup of coffee for you, lady?”
April: “Yes, Will. And thank you. You seem to be quite at home here.”
Will: “I used to work here. I made the donuts.”
April: “Isn’t your last name the same as the character of Sherlock Holmes friend and assistant, Doctor Watson?”
Will: “Yes, I believe it is.”
April: “And wasn’t Alexander Graham Bell’s assistant’s name Watson?”
Will: “Yes, again. What are you getting at, ma’am?”
April: “I’m just wondering if there is some special meaning in your name. Maybe you’re some kind of assistant.”
Will: “Maybe I am. Are you in need of “some kind of an assistant, lady?”
April: “Yes, I believe I am.”
Will: “What kind of assistance do you need?”
April: “Well, it occurs to me that you may be the only man left alive on planet Earth; and if that is so, then I would appreciate having someone to talk to about this new state we are in; and discuss how we might make the best of it.”
Will: “It is written: ‘Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!”
April: “Is that a Bible quotation?”
Will: “Yes, it is. Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10.”
April: “Are you a believer in the Son of God, Will?”
Will: “Yes, I am. May I ask your name, dear lady?”
April: “My name is April – April Light Shower.”
Will: “I like that name. It reminds me of early Springtime and showers from above that nurture seeds and plants that make the flowers of May appear. I look forward to April every year.”
April: “Why, Watson?”
Watson: “It’s the first month of Spring – when the world begins to warm-up a little; and there’s hope that things out there will get pretty again after “the winter of man’s discontent.”
April: “The winter of man’s discontent”? Where does that phrase come from, Watson?”
Watson: “I read it once upon a time in a book by Henry David Thoreau.”
April: “And what is the name of Henry David Thoreau’s book?”
Watson: “Walden: Or, Life in the Woods.”
April: “I like the way you think, Watson – positively and poetically. Maybe that is how love songs get their words that go so well with their melody.”
Will: “It may be the beauty in Creation that inspires such poetic words to spring up from the human heart. Thoreau wrote: “The perception of beauty is a moral test.”

Later, April was considering how it was and how it turned out that she survived whatever it was that took the life of everyone else except her and Will Watson. She thought – “that experience, that ordeal of being imprisoned in the vault may have saved my life. It didn’t feel like salvation while I was enduring it – that’s for sure; but, by the grace of God I came through it and was born again by the grace of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; and have received a fundamentally new outlook on life. And I met Will. And we are enjoying a mutually loving friendship.” April still did not understand how Will survived whatever took the life of everyone else; however, she recalled this from God’s Holy Scriptures:

April was wondering about her assistant and friend, Will. She wondered if his first name was William. And then she noticed in her mind’s eye that the last three letters of William are I am. And one of the God Almighty given responsibilities of government servants is to tax – especially taxing the rich in this world – so government has what is needed to do its job of managing the Country for True God in righteousness and justice and equity.
Therefore, you rich corporations, stop deserting your responsibility to pay your taxes.
And you government workers: Do Your Job and write and pass legislation to raise taxes and force the unwilling rich to pay what they owe – for the wellbeing of the United States of America and all the living on God Almighty’s Earth.
The kingdom of God is surely coming — The home of righteousness
Those who refuse to repent and believe in True God and His righteousness will pass away along with the world that lies in the power of the evil one. They will never see nor enjoy nor live in the new heavens and the new earth. They will not be regenerated at the time of the regeneration of all things.
They will inherit eternal punishment and eternal damnation and eternal torment in hell and in the lake of fire.
“For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
