Today is July 19th, 2026.
Believe I moved into my very first apartment — 162 Papineau Avenue in East Woonsocket
On this day in 1971 — 55 years ago.
You were 7 years old.
Todd was 4 years old.
I was 19 years old.
19, 7 and 4 . . .
“The Summer of ’74”
Eileen . . .
Believe it was — and is — the 200 day of the year.
A few days earlier — a Saturday evening —
Mom and Dad accompanied me to view the apartment.
Before we got there, Dad mentioned the possibility that it was owned by Mrs. Camilucci.
We knew the Camilucci’s because they had lived on Sweet Avenue in the 1950s —
In the house next to the Desjardins’ house at the corner of Elm Street and Sweet Avenue —
The house just before the Lambert’s house — and earlier it was the Nault’s house — and then it was the Derosiers’ house.
[And the Oberzol’s lived in that house, too. Marilyn, their daughter, was so beautiful !]
And when we got there, we did indeed meet Mrs. Camilucci.
She agreed to rent the two-room apartment to me.
I believe the rent was $16 a week.
Red Jolly and his family lived in the house next door to Mrs. Camilucci.
Only years later did mom tell me that he was in high school with her.
In my one-and-only old Verizon phone book for August 2013-2014
Julien Joly is still listed at 142 Papineau Avenue — that’s him.
But that was 12 years ago . . .
About a year ago, I walked to Papineau Avenue to see “my” old house again.
Walked to the end of that dead-end street.
There are woods beyond it.
Many acorns were on the ground there.
I picked up one of them.
Its “roof” fell off — but I picked that part up too.
Put it in my pocket as a “keep-sake.”

It’s in a little compartment at the base of my desk lamp right behind my all-in-one computer that I’m using now to write to you, Jason.
Maybe someday someone will plant that acorn, and it just might grow up and become a tall old tree someday . . .
