A Horrible Thing Is Happening
When I remember how things were in the decade of the 1950s when I was born – in late 1951 – and see how things are in the world today – I understand that a horrible thing is happening to the world and civilization. There was something good and wonderful about life and community in those early years of my life – in the neighborhood where I grew up on Sweet Avenue and over on Main Street in downtown Woonsocket, Rhode Island. That goodness and wonderfulness is gone now. In so many ways the beautifulness of Life has passed away.
And what has taken its place is Corruption – corruption by way of bad laws that have permitted a corporate state to grow up and commercialize life on Earth. Tall buildings and fast cars and jets and airports and parking lots and highways and nuclear power plants; and nuclear bombs and laboratories that make manmade viruses as weapons that escape into society and oil drilling in the oceans that cause pollution — and lately, artificial intelligence that is replacing jobs for people with unemployment and homelessness and the anger creeping into professional sports and a vast host of other innumerable evils that are turning human life into misery for most of us – and the inequity of humongous wealth being accumulated by The Few and vast poverty being suffered by The Many.
It seems that Politics – under the influence of “the god of this world” has created a Corporate State that is mechanizing life on earth – so that all goodness of God is drying up and leaving a vast desert of emptiness for all the unfortunate human beings left on earth today.
“The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.’” –Genesis 6: 5-7.
