Today is July 30th
My childhood friend Charley Desjardins was born on this day.
I saw his address once in a telephone directory.
It was an address on Glen Road.
I don’t know the exact address now.
He departed 6 years ago.
On April 20th, 2020.
There are 3 “20s” in his departure date: 4/20/2020
And there are 4 “7s” in Eileen the Second’s daughter’s birth date.
And, I have a hunch that Eileen the Second’s first husband’s first name is Charles.
And his last name starts with “De” – as my friend Charley’s last name also begins with “De.”
Changing the subject now . . .
This Generation Is So Very Sad
We graduated from St. Charles School after growing up together for 8 years – first graders to 8th graders – 6 years old to 13 years old – young teenagers.
And after that last day – about the middle of June 1966 — we could never go back to school there again.
Our class – the Class of St. Charles School 1966 — was over – forever.
In First Grade with Sister Mary Carlene — 1958 –’59 — there were more than 60 of us.
I don’t know how many of us were still there in 8th grade –
About 40 students, I guess.

We never sat in class together ever again.
We never were in the cafeteria together for lunch ever again.
We never began our school day together with prayer and saluting the flag together ever again.
And the neighborhood where I first lived on Sweet Avenue for 18 years . . .
We grew up and moved away.
We are not neighbors there anymore — on Sweet Avenue
And we have gotten “older” . . .
We are not young children anymore
And the Senior Citizens of Sweet Avenue have departed
And we who were children there are on our way now to departing also – in our mid-70s.
And our bodies ache now
There is pain every day
And I remember my dad
Worked with him at his TV and radio shop for about 3 years

My dad was good to me.
He’s been gone now for about 52 years –
A “Year” of Years –
A year for every week in a year – 52 weeks = a year.
And this year is 2026

There may be a bookkeeper in my heart.

It was St. Ann’s Convent once upon a time in reality.
My parents got married there – in the chapel on the second floor — on June 19th, 1948.

When I worked at my dad’s TV shop in the 1960s, there was an album by Barbra Streisand there in the shop. She was so young then. She had only recently become a famous singer and actress. I worked there when I was about 15 to 17. Across the street was “The House of Brides” bridal shop.

When I walk up Social Street in Woonsocket on the way to the supermarket in Bellingham, Massachusetts, I see so many memories:
The school where my grandmother and mom went to elementary school
Brook Street where I waited in the car when my dad went into a house there to collect a bill.
Another house where I waited in the car for dad on East School Street near Elm Street.
Belisle’s Bakery on Rathbun Street where I went in and dad waited in the car while I bought brown bread on Saturday nights before we went home after work. That bakery isn’t there anymore – but the memory of it is still with me.
Oak Hill Cemetery at 204 Rathbun Street –
Woonsocket’s Wilderness Cemetery, I call it –
Where there is a tombstone with Eileen [the Second’s] and my birthday on opposite sides of that stone.
Job Pickford is the name of that family gravestone.

Last evening I went out for a walk. July 29th it was. I didn’t plan on walking all the way to Glen Road; but, that is where I went. At the corner of Spring Street and the bottom of Glen Road a woman was walking her dog. She began going up the hill of Glen Road. She mentioned something to her dog about chasing rabbits. So, I asked her what her dog did when he caught a rabbit. She said he never catches them. I told her that a long time ago I knew a family that had lived on Glen Road. She mentioned Chris. I said, “Yes, that’s Eileen’s younger brother. And there is also Scott, Eileen’s other brother; and Eileen’s younger sister, Carolyn.” She said she had passed the paper [The Woonsocket Call] there, years ago. I mentioned that my pediatrician had lived in the house right after Eileen’s. And Lee Lareau who was in my class at St. Charles School lived across the street – but closer to Upland Road. And Kelan Putman lived in the house at the corner of Glen Road and Oakley Road. Then she and her dog crossed the street. I continued alone – walking by the house where Eileen and her family had lived many years ago.
When I reached the end of Glen Road, turned right onto Upland Road and then turned right again onto Woodland Road. It began to rain. I prayed that God would stop the rain. I tried to discern the house where the Saint Germain’s had lived. I couldn’t be sure which one it was. I have a notion that, maybe, the backyard of the Saint Germain’s former home and the backyard of the O’Gara’s former property might be back-to-back. And then as I began going down the hill of Woodland Road a rabbit scampered from the sidewalk and across someone’s front yard to my right. I remembered the lady with her dog saying something to him about chasing rabbits. Then I began imagining telling Eileen the Second that I got caught in the rain walking into her childhood neighborhood.

Eileen: “Mark, did you really take a walk last evening to Glen Road and talk with a lady walking her white dog; and see a rabbit on Woodland Road; and get rained on ?”
Mark: “Yes, Eileen. It all really happened.”
Eileen: “I wonder what it would be like, Mark — if we meet again – for the first time in about 67 years ?”
Mark: “I wonder too, Eileen.”
Eileen: “We never said a word to each other – during our First Grade school days, Mark. It would be “the first time ever” we hear each other’s voices – in Reality.”
Mark: “Yes, Eileen. It would be “the first time ever I hear your voice — and you hear mine. May it please our Lord God and heavenly Father to bring us together in “the new heaven and the new earth” that His Holy Spirit reveals to us in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 21. The word “Together” has 8 letters. And the word “her” is in that 8-letter word: To Get Her – as in “to receive her” – as a heavenly gift from God to us who truly believe in His Son and believe the gospel of the kingdom of God. Amen.”
