Flowering Garden
Wouldn’t it be wonderful
If Saint Charles Redbrick Schoolhouse was rebuilt . . .
I wonder if the architectural plans are still to be found . . .
And this time
The schoolhouse was to become a home of 8 apartments
And
A library
And an auditorium
And the schoolyard . . .
What could the old schoolyard become, I wonder . . .
A flower garden . . .
A flowering garden of broken-open seeds
A Lazarus Garden
Growing up and becoming something very new
Makes me cry . . . sweetly crying . . .
“Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Maybe Eileen and Mark will finally be together at last . . .
Maybe there will be a cemetery plot there just for her and him . . .
During our last year at St. Charles School, Eileen and I had our desks in the row right next to the windows overlooking the schoolyard – first and second desks in Sister William Mary’s classroom in the Springtime of 1966. Imagining that 8th-grade classroom now as someone’s apartment – and they look out their window every morning – and see our romantic gravestone in the flower garden below. Maybe they have binoculars just as I do – and they can read the writing on our tombstone. Wondering what it will say. Maybe Eileen’s daughter Mary will think of something beautiful and lovely about her mother and mark.
