August: “November is approaching. Even though I was born in November it is far from being my favorite time of the year.”
April: “What don’t you like about November, August ?”
August: “The leaves fall off the trees; the temperature gets much cooler; the days are shorter; we turn the clocks back. It’s about as hospitable as a cabin unoccupied on a lonely island. The Hardy Boys had an adventure called: “Cabin Island.” It was very wintery there. They used their iceboats to travel across Barmet Bay to reach it – at Christmastime – with some friends. It was so very cold that winter that the surface of the bay had frozen. I think they stayed there for two whole weeks – during Christmas vacation from Bayport High School. And they had a mystery to investigate while they were there. I read it so many years ago – even decades ago – that I can only remember a few details.”
April: “Tell me a detail you remember, August.”
August: “They were trying to sleep one night; and they kept hearing a strange noise that kept them awake. And the wintery wind was strong that night.”
April: “Did they ever discover the source of the noise ?”
August: “Yes, eventually. If I remember correctly, someone plugged up a hole in the cabin wall or roof with a bottle. The cap fell off the bottle; and so, the blowing wind was making a howling sound across the open bottle.”
April: “I wonder what mystery they were trying to solve on Cabin Island.”
August: “I can’t remember that part of the story; but, I remember something else.”
April: “What something else do you remember, August ?”
August: “I returned the book to the St. Charles School library; and then the next day, my dad was asking me what happened to the book. He said he had been reading it (late at night while I was sleeping). I told him I returned it. I always feel very sad that I didn’t go back to the library and borrow the book again – for my dad. My dad liked walking in the woods. I haven’t seen him since Christmas Day 1974. He died on December 28 of that year. I worked with him for about 3 years – at his radio and TV shop. It was my first job. And that Hardy Boys book just happened to be the 8th in the series of 58 stories. That number keeps appearing in my life. And I began writing this writing on October 28. It is now October 29, 2026. My dad was born on the 29th of August – the 8th month. He departed on the 28th of December – 49 years and 4 months later. I was 23 years old.”
