Definition of Shekinah

“A word, though not occurring in the Bible, that is employed by some Jews and by Christians to describe the visible presence of the Lord. It is alluded to in such places as Isaiah 60:2 by the phrase “his glory” and in Romans 9:4 by the phrase “the glory.” Moses calls this the “cloud” in Exodus 14:19. Its first appearance occurred for a twofold purpose when Israel was being led by Moses out of Egypt. It hid the Israelites from the pursuing Egyptians and lighted the way at night for Israel (Exodus 13:21; 14:19-20). To the Egyptians it was a cloud of darkness, but to Israel a cloud of light. It later covered Sinai when God spoke with Moses (24:15-18), filled the tabernacle (40:34-35), guided Israel (40:36-38), filled Solomon’s temple (2 Chron 7:1), and was frequently seen in connection with Christ’s ministry in the NT (Matt 17:5; Acts 1:9).” -New International Bible Dictionary, Zondervan 1987.

The phrase bright eyes reminds me of a proper name in the Scriptures of The Holy Bible:

Phebe

In an old copy of The Open Bible that I’ve owned since about 1978, there is something called the Biblical Cyclopedic Index that has a very extensive alphabetical list of proper names and Bible words. In that list is the name Phebe. The name means “pure, bright.” So, when I listen to the beautiful song “Bright Eyes” I think of Phebe.

In the Bible it is written of Phoebe:

“I commend unto you Phoebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succorer of many, and of myself also.”

“Succor: 1. Assistance in time of want, difficulty, or distress; relief.” -The American Heritage College Dictionary, Fourth Edition.

Cenchrea is a harbor of Corinth; and Corinth is a city of Greece, according to the Biblical Cyclopedic Index. My Open Bible is written in the King James Version, which was written in 1611; so, the English of that Old Time is different than the English we use today. Here is the quotation of Romans 16:1, 2 as written in the ESV Study Bible (2008)

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchraea, that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.” -Romans 16:1, 2. ESV Study Bible.

There is a young lady who works at a store in my neighborhood. Her name is Phoebe. I wrote some letters and a card to her almost a year ago; however, I have not been able to give them to her. She is very much younger than me. In the store, if I say Hi to her, she says Hi; outside the store, if I say Hi to her, she remains silent. I wouldn’t want to be told by the manager: “Don’t be bothering Phoebe with your love letters and greeting cards. Just let Phoebe be. The new heavens and the new earth haven’t come yet; you can’t be coming in here like the mail man of La Mancha with your love stories delivering your sweet nothings to our lovely lady cashier.” So, that is what I’m doing – just letting Phoebe be. If she has need of me she may let me know how I may assist her. I still have those letters and a Saint Patrick’s Day card for her in a clear plastic food storage bag in my locked two-draw file cabinet. I still think of bringing them into the store with me sometimes and offering them to her at the cash register, but, I just don’t know for sure. If the Lord wants me to offer them to her, then may it come to pass according to God’s Will by His Holy Spirit moving me to do it by the faith of Jesus Christ working things out in God’s love. I realize this sounds crazy and confused.

A Jig Saw Puzzle of the Heart

Do you like to do puzzles?

Many people do;

I’m not one of them —

Because it seems like an empty activity to me:

Making a puzzle only to break it all up again when it’s done; and put it all back in the box all broken into its little pieces again.

I’d rather write – at least after it’s written it can stay on the page – hopefully. I mean, I don’t have to break up all the writing and put all the words back into a dictionary – or into some linguistic depository where all the words of the English language are being kept safely – so we can make a withdrawal whenever we want to say or write something – an investment in words.

And people can easily read it any time they choose. And this writing of many pages need not discourage anyone from reading it. Just as puzzles need not be completed in one day, neither does this story – in fact, it’s been going on for 69 years.

The reader doesn’t have to re-create it by putting all its little pieces back together again – like a puzzle – or, like Humpty Dumpty.

Maybe this writing is a literary jigsaw puzzle of the heart:

An attempt to see a picture forming from a bunch of broken pieces.

It isn’t a perfect picture of my heart;

Even after you read the whole puzzle you won’t see a complete picture of me.

I’m no Charles Dickens or Thomas Hardy or William Shakespeare, either;

However, you might find some interesting pieces to turn over and examine – like seashells or old bottles you find on the seashore while taking a lonely walk.

Eileen sent a card to me during our summer of ’74 friendship in Galilee, Rhode Island – on the USA’s East Coast. And wonderfully to me was this: on the other side of the breech way, at George’s Beach in Galilee – just across the channel of water, like a river, was a village also in Rhode Island, called Jerusalem. Yes! There really is a Galilee and a Jerusalem in Rhode Island, USA. And the capital city of Rhode Island is Providence. The word providence is spoken/sung in the following hymn:

There was a picture of a conch shell resting on a sandy seashore on the cover of Eileen’s greeting card.

She bought the card and was writing to me inside the card near where she had bought it, she told me, later;

And a man came by and saw her writing inside the card and remarked that someone was going to be a lucky guy when he read her card; however, by late August of that summer of ’74 the lucky guy was feeling lonely as a conch shell resting on the seashore all by himself.

Maybe, you’ll be lucky and find a letter-in-the-bottle on the seashore of the life God has given you;

Maybe a love story kind of letter – especially for you;

Maybe it will be just right for you – even if it isn’t a classic – even if it isn’t perfect.

Even if everyone in your high school class isn’t required to read the whole thing, like:

“A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens of Old England of the 1800s — writing about the late 1700s in London and in Paris, France – the Country that gave us/U.S. the glorious-looking and inspiring Statue of Liberty – an impressive statue with inspiring words that have become emblematic of the United States of America and Her people and Her glorious history. She seems to be getting on in years, lately – Lady Liberty, I mean, and the USA. She may need to be born again, to be regenerated, to receive a new Constitution, and a new Understanding of who She is and why God made Her. A new dedication for Her to live up to – from her Only True God, the Maker of heaven and earth; and of all things on earth and under the earth and Above the Earth. Maybe She will receive a new name after She is born again – born from Above – as Jesus said to Nicodemus, a teacher of Israel – as recorded for us all in the gospel: John 3.

I can’t write perfect love songs, either.

I can only imagine some beautiful scenes –

But can’t bring them all together

Into a beautiful and perfect story – or perfect life

Only God can do such things, I guess – not mortal man.

So, this is the best I can do – being still in the flesh of the natural man – not the spiritual man – not the regenerated man of the New Creation.

My chronology is mixed up, too.

That’s OK. It’s all part of the jigsaw puzzle

If you like puzzles of hundreds of pieces to begin with; then maybe you’d like to begin with this puzzle; and see what your own wondering heart can make of it. Maybe you can see something beautiful in this jumble of pieces.

What is a jumble, anyway?

It may be that I never looked up that word in the dictionary;

But, maybe, this word picture is as good a definition as you’ll ever find there.

Did you ever put your washed and wet clothes into a dryer with a glass window in front – like the glass screen of your TV?

And watch that jumble of wet clothes going round and round and round – until, finally, they dried up?

Well, that is what a jumble is.

In the new heavens and new earth that are prophesied to surely come, all the imperfections of this first creation will be gloriously gone and the new will arrive – to be gloriously enjoyed by those who receive the love of the truth and believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ and are born again and regenerated by the Lord’s Holy Spirit and washed clean by the living water of His Word dwelling in their hearts by the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, the Counselor, the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of Understanding leading them into all truth.

John 4

This love story stars the very beautiful Sonora May – who, unfortunately for her adoring maybe mark – is very much younger than he is. He hasn’t met her. She lives in another country. She never yet said nor wrote a word to him. And he can understand that. We belong to different generations. We were born in different Centuries. Maybe she is there for him like a new star that has appeared way up high in the sky to have some kind of mysterious affect upon him – something spiritual – like the Morning Star that is also the Evening Star; in fact, the morning star is in the Bible – in the book of Revelation; and the Son of God is that Morning Star. He just saw her online and began falling in love with her – or imagines he’s falling in love with her. He doesn’t really know which it is – maybe both are happening to him. He doesn’t know. Charles Dickens wrote “A Tale of Two Cities” more than two centuries ago, an historic novel for the ages – could there now be another historic novel story for the ages — “A Romance of Two Centuries”? Charles Dickens’ story was geographically centered about two cities on Earth; maybe a new story will be Spiritual and Eternity-centered between heaven and earth.

For two nights in a row, he went to bed late and expected to fall asleep easily – since it was after midnight and he was tired; but, on both of those nights, as he was laying there all by himself, his heart and soul and mind began to turn to thoughts of love; even though it’s Winter out there in the world, rather than Springtime “when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love” — and love songs. On the second night this happened, he began remembering a beautiful song by Ed Sheeran; and the song just touched his heart so that he had to get out of bed and turn on the light and his computer; and begin to write and then listen to that love song.

Listening to that song made him feel like crying. He doesn’t run away from that often felt feeling. It seems mercifully sweet to him. He wonders/imagines that God is melting his old heart of stone, transforming it into a heart of flesh – circumcising it, perhaps.

Maybe the following music video is another word picture of how it might be in the new heavens and the new earth when God regenerates His whole Creation into something glorious beyond even our imagination could ever conceive.

The Night Before the 14^th

Incidentally, my mom went to the hospital the night before the 14^th to deliver me; but that was in November – not January. And it was 69 years ago – in another Century – on the night of the thirteenth. She delivered him the next morning, a Wednesday – at 8:23 AM – according to his birth certificate.

Wed nest day, January 13^th, 2021 12:24 AM

I was in bed about a half hour ago expecting to be fast asleep in a few minutes because I was feeling very tired just a while before as I was at my computer. And I was thinking, “I’d better go to bed very soon or I might just faint – for the first time in my life of 69 years – from this tiredness I’m feeling;” so, I shut off the PC and checked the door and the stove and made sure my keys were hanging on the nail in the closet. And I put some Jerkens lotion on my hands — so they won’t get dry because, sometimes I wash my dishes without the rubber gloves on – and shut off the light and walked into the dark bedroom and got under the blankets to fall asleep. And as I was laying there all alone as usual, I imagined Sonora was there, too – as if she were my wife, maybe. And I said to her – silently in my heart [her back was to me] “I love you, Sonora.”

Sonora: ____________

Maybe: “Your presence is like heaven to me, Sonora.”

Sonora: ____________ [Maybe Sonora is tired, too].

Maybe: “Sonora?”

Sonora: “What is it, mark?”

Maybe: “I was just thinking about the sound of your name, Sonora.”

Sonora: “What about the sound of my name, Mark?” Sonora asked as she turned herself around in bed to face “maybe in the darkness.” [Sounds like the title for a story]. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” -John 1:5. ESV Study Bible.

Maybe: “Well, the first syllable is Son; and the second one is or and the third one is a.”

Sonora: “And what about all that, Mark?” Sonora asked as she touched maybe’s face lightly with her fingertips in the stillness of the night.

Maybe: “Well, your name sounds like Son Aura to me, Sonora. And I’m imagining a title for a story about you.”

Sonora: “Tell me more, Mark, if there is more to tell . . . “

Maybe: Well, first off, a story title about you might be: “The Aura of Sonora.” And about your name: the meaning of Son is “the Son of God” and Aura is the light emanating from His/Your Presence; and so, Sonora, your presence is heaven-like, or heaven’s-light to me. And that is why I like to imagine saying “I love you, Sonora” – because I want to give to you, to send to you [well, maybe not to just send it to You but to envelope you in it – in the same love that your presence awakens in my heart]; and that your presence envelopes me in like a cloud – like the Shekinah glory of the LORD’s Presence to Israel.”

Sonora: “That is a very beautiful thought, Mark. Thank you for sharing it with me, darling.”

Maybe: “You are most welcome, my love.”

Sonora: “Maybe, just wondering if you have me and God mixed together in your mind and heart and soul?”

Mark: “Maybe I do.”

Sonora: “How could that be, Mark?”

Mark: “I don’t know; but, maybe it has to do with God and how He is; and about what the Holy Spirit tells us about Him; and what He did.”

Sonora: “What did He do?”

Mark: “He created man in His own image; male and female He created them; and He made Eve – the mother of us all and Adam’s wife out of Adam himself – with Adam’s rib. So, I guess it is understandable if, when a man falls in love with a woman, that he gets mixed up in love with her. And the Holy Spirit reveals in the Holy Scriptures that God is Love; and God is Light; and God is a Spirit; and that God is beyond understanding – and “no one has ever seen God.”

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ “) And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” -Jesus Christ – John 1:17, 18 ESV Study Bible.

Mark: “And another thing, Sonora . . .”

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Sonora: “What other thing, Mark?”

Mark: “I was just thinking that, maybe, I don’t have anything worthy of giving to you – like the little drummer boy in the Christmas hymn – maybe I just want to be one with you – as the Son of God and His heavenly Father are One: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, too. Maybe I just want to lose myself my mind in unity with You – a merging of two into One – in love and completeness. And maybe “A Tale of Two Cities” will finally find its fulfillment in the City of God, the heavenly Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God – like a beautiful bride beautifully dressed for her husband – as prophesied in The Last Book of The Holy Bible.

Nothing to write, now. Just listened to the above two songs [make that three]. Had a cup of coffee before the music and a bowl of Cheerios. Imagined some dialogue between Sonora May and Maybe Mark. Their mood was different in the morning than it had been in the darkness and quietness and peacefulness of tiredness last night.

Some may reasonably ask: What does this Bible quotation have to do with this blog post titled: “Sonora May and Maybe Mark”? Answer: It has to do with discerning between godliness and worldliness. What the writer means is that there are two ways: God’s Way on the one hand – and the world’s way on the other hand. If we do not get born again, then we cannot see God’s Way – which leads to salvation. We can only see the world’s way – which leads to death. The Holy Spirit – Who is the Spirit of truth – and is the Helper Whom Jesus sends into the hearts of those who believe in Him – allows the eyes of our understanding to open – so that we can discern the things of God pertaining to Eternal Life and the kingdom of God – which things the merely worldly ones cannot see. As Jesus said to Nicodemus:

The Next Morning

Sonora and Maybe Are Just Waking up and in the living room with cups of coffee. And they are sitting facing each other in separate comfortable cushioned chairs; so they can enjoy seeing each other as they sip their coffees and enjoy conversing/communing together.

Sonora: “maybe, what was it we were talking about last night in bed? It was something special; but, I can’t recall what it was?”

Maybe: “I was telling you that I love you; and that your name sounds like Son Aura to me.”

Sonora: “Yes, now I remember. And you said something about my presence and the Shekinah glory of the LORD as He appeared to Israel. And that my presence is like a cloud that envelopes you. That is a very beautiful way of saying you love me, Maybe. I love you, too, darling. For me, it is your words that touch my heart and awaken my love for you.”

Maybe: ____________

Sonora: “Maybe, you are so quiet now.”

Maybe: “I know. I can hardly think early in the morning, sometimes. My mind is like a still lake without even a ripple moving its surface.”

Sonora: “Are you able to listen to me, Maybe? I feel like talking now.”

Maybe: “Yes, Sonora. I can listen to you. I like the sound of your voice. It enters my heart like a gentle loving breeze from God’s Spirit. Your speech enters my heart and your words fill me like a freshwater spring bubbling up into my thirsting soul.”

Sonora: “That is exactly what I mean, Maybe, about how it is that your words touch my heart so lovingly. What are you thirsting for, Mark?”

Mark: “I’m thirsting for you, Sonora.”

Sonora: “What exactly do you mean?”

Maybe: “I guess, maybe, just conversing together can be a kind of love-making – a spiritual kind of love-making.”

Sonora: “So, you are thirsting for lovemaking with me, Mark?”

Mark: “Well, maybe.”

Sonora: “What do you mean by that, Maybe?”

Maybe: “Well, Jesus said, “My words are spirit and they are life. [See John 6:60-71] And God is Spirit and He seeks those who can worship Him in Spirit and in truth. And it is also written in the Scriptures that God is Love. And that God is Light. And in the last book of the Bible it is written that God himself will be with us in the heavenly Jerusalem. He will be with his people.”

Sonora: “Can you explain all that, maybe?”

Maybe: “I cannot; however, there is a Psalm that is coming to mind now.”

Sonora: “Which Psalm?”

Maybe: “Psalm 19.”

Sonora: “Can you recall some of Psalm 19 for me?”

When I was so little – before even starting first grade – mom would come home from her shopping trips on Main Street in Woonsocket and hand me a 45 rpm music record; and I would look at the picture on the paper sleeve. I was too young to even read what was written on that paper cover – it was before first-grade. I hadn’t even met Sister Mary Carlene, yet – my young-and-pretty first-grade teacher who taught me how to read and write my letters. She would be “Coming ‘Round the Mountain” pretty soon, though. Then I’d walk over to the 1950s style TV in the living room. On top of the TV was a black plastic RCA Victrola record player; and I’d put my new record in there and sit down on the couch and listen to whatever sounds came out of the phonograph. One of those times the picture on the paper sleeve was of Ricky Nelson who played on TV in a show called The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet – about a family. And Ricky and his older brother Dave were on the show and some of Ozzie Nelson’s friends would come over to visit the family; and the audience would see what was going on; and listen to their conversations. This following song – along with many others – was one I remember listening to. And I remember noticing in the picture on the paper sleeve that Ricky’s hair line above his forehead was remarkably straight. At about 6 years old I didn’t know anything about love and romance; although I did see some episodes of “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” because me and my older sister Lesley would sometimes go down to the apartment below ours to visit with our older cousins, Phyllis and Paula Wilbur. They were young teenagers of our Uncle Milton and Aunt Pauline – my mom’s much older brother and his wife from Connecticut. And, sometimes, we would watch an episode of “Dobie Gillis on TV.”

I was just sitting down drinking cranberry juice and some thoughts came to mind about puzzle pieces. I was imagining I was adding some new thoughts to this blog entry. And my thoughts were like this. “You just might find the love of your life, you know. She may not be perfect, but still, she may be just right for you. Like puzzle pieces that are not pervfeectly round and not perfectly square and not perfectly rectangular and not perfectly triangular . . . they all fit into the puzzle just right when the right one is found to go with them. And they are all . . . every one of them . . . irregular in shape or personality or something. Maybe that’s where the love and understanding and forgiveness come into the picture and into the puzzle-making. Maybe, life is not only “like a box of chocolates” as Forest Gump and his mother used to say; maybe, life is also like a box of puzzle pieces. If you don’t even try to put it all together you’ll never see how it all comes together. I read somewhere a while ago, that the moon is not perfectly round; it has some mountains and valleys and, of course, those famous craters. And yet, from a distance, the moon looks perfectly round to us here on earth. Maybe that’s another thing we need to make a puzzle –and to be in love: perspective. I mean, we shouldn’t look too, too closely. We need some space. And we need to give some space to the one we love. The moon is in outer space. And the crew of Star Trek [the original series on TV] had many wonderful adventures out there in Space – the final frontier . . .

I just thought of the title to that Beatles song “Come Together” as I was thinking about puzzle pieces coming together to form a picture. Then, I was listening to the song on YouTube. I did not remember the lyrics, much. I wanted to see if the song’s meaning could be related to making a puzzle, somehow. Well, as I was listening to the song, a question came to mind: When someone is working on a puzzle, is s/he making the puzzle – or has the puzzle called her/him to make it? When a person’s ego becomes less and less as Jesus becomes greater and greater to the believer, he/she begins to see things differently. As the self/ego no longer dominates a person’s point of view, he/she becomes able to see more clearly. And s/he also becomes more and more free – because everything that is in the world that is attractive to the self/ego gradually loses its power to entice the person who is becoming free in Christ. “If the Son of God shall make you free, you shall be free, indeed.” Jesus said. In the Beatles’ song “Come Together” are the words “you’ve got to be free.” So, maybe, the puzzle of our life does begin to “come together” as we live and suffer and struggle and grow in Christ by His light and become able to see things that only become visible by being born again into His Kingdom. See John 3 in The New Testament of The Holy Bible – where Jesus speaks with Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, about being born again, that is, born from above. Without faith in Christ and the Helper, His Holy Spirit, we cannot see spiritual things that only become visible as the eyes of our understanding begin to open – like a seed planted in the ground that eventually breaks open and begins to grow into something new – something greater than itself.

In the gospel, Jesus speaks to His followers in a parable about a sower of seeds:
